CEL/TEZA: Celem pracy jest określenie w jakim stopniu bazy bibliograficzne Web of Science i Scopus mogą być przydatne w procesie przygotowywania badań historycznych oraz w procesie oceny dorobku polskich historyków. KONCEPCJA/METODY BADAŃ: Analiza danych dotyczących europejskich czasopism historycznych indeksowanych w obu bazach. WYNIKI I WNIOSKI: Obie bazy nie są wiarygodnym źródłem informacji ani o europejskich czasopismach historycznych wydawanych poza Europą Zachodnią, ani o tendencjach w historiografii, z tym, że Scopus oferuje bardziej kompletny i zróżnicowany terytorialnie i językowo zbiór danych. W przypadku znaczącej części tematyki badawczej europejskiej historiografii nie jest prawdziwa teza mówiąca, że głównym językiem komunikacji naukowej jest angielski. W przypadku czasopism historycznych nie sprawdza się idea tworzenia ich zasadniczego jądra w oparciu o prawo Bradforda. Prowadzenie analiz bibliometrycznych, w celu oceny dorobku polskich historyków, w oparciu o bazę Web of Science pozbawione jest merytorycznego uzasadnienia. WARTOŚĆ POZNAWCZA: Dokonane ustalenia podważają część przyjętych w Polsce zasad oceny dorobku historyków.

PURPOSE/THESIS: The aim of this paper is to determine the extent to which bibliographic databases (Web of Science and Scopus) can be useful in the process of preparation of historical research and in the process of evaluating the achievements of Polish historians. APPROACH/METHODS: The analysis of data concerning European historical journals indexed in both databases. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Both databases are not a reliable source of Information neither about the European historical journals published outside Western Europę, nor about trends in historiography, except that Scopus provides a more complete and varied geographically and linguistically dataset. In the case of significant part of the research topics of European historiography, argument stating that the main language of scientific communication is English is not true. In the case of the historical magazines the idea of creating their basie kernel based on the Bradfords law does not work. Conducting bibliometrics studies in order to evaluate the scientific achievements of Polish historians, based on a database of Web of Science, has no scientific basis. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The findings undermine the part of adopted in Poland rules of evaluation of the scientific achievements of historians.
