This paper presents the evolution of absolute employment specialization along the course of economic growth of EU-25 countries. The authoress focuses on the degree to which EU economies concentrate labor force in a few sectors/industries. She uses disaggregated statistics classified according to NACE Rev. 1 division (71 sectors) and calculates various synthetic indices measuring the degree of diversification typical for the employment structures of EU15 countries (1970-2004) and ten New Member States (1995-2004). Using nonparametric and semiparametric estimation techniques, she estimates the relationship between employment specialization and the development level, controlling for the inclusion of additional determinants of the diversification process. The main findings are in line with the trends revealed in analogical empirical studies using industrial data for international samples of countries: also within the enlarged EU there is a tendency towards decreasing absolute specialization of employment at initial phases of growth matched with an upward rising trend after over passing the GDP per capita level of about 16000 US $ (const 2000).

The paper relates to factors determining regional development. The aim of the paper was to analyse theoretically the relationship between export and regional growth, particularly in the context of productivity growth. The analysed model was the Kaldor-Dixon-Thirlwall (hereafter KDT) model, in which the competitiveness of the export-base is linked to (nonprice) quality improvements brought about by increases in productivity rather than by terms-of-trade price differences.

The article presents evaluation of agri-tourist activities in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship the analyses were performed at the turn of 2014 and 2015 and they cover the yeras 2010-2015, including comparative data from 1998-2007.The results of investigations show that in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship there are many areas of natural value with tourist objects which are worth interest and attention of visitors. However, in terms of the number of agri-tourist farms the province is only on the 13th position in Poland and 10th position in terms of the number of tourists who use accommodation, altogether. Due to the agricultural potential of the province it is predisposed to development of agricultural activities. At the same time, these natural values can be used by smaller farms to make additional profits by accommodating tourists. The majority of agri-tourist farms in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship can be found in the following districts: tucholski (85), świecki (44), brodnicki (33), bydgoski (29) and żniński (27).

Th e objective of this article is familiarisation with the issues relating to agricultural development in Poland and its perspectives for the future. A trial to assess the development of the Polish agricultural areas has been made five years after the accession to the European Union. The analysis has been performed on the basis of the data from Economical Accounts for Agriculture (EAA), the Central Statistical Office (GUS) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MRiRW). Chosen data on income and subsidies in the farm sector in Poland between 2003 and 2008 have been quoted. The analysis of the statistical data shows that farmers’ income after the Poland’s accession to the EU has risen nearly twice but the financial situation of people living in the agricultural areas is still very diversified. Their income has increased thanks to the EU direct subsidies. The integration between Poland and the European Union has created additional opportunities for growth in the food and agriculture sector. For five years of the Polish membership in the EU the export of farm and food products has nearly tripled.

Children's speech perception strategies, together with speech production, start developing from the very beginning of language acquisition. In the case of children exhibiting usual (normal) qualitative and quantitative changes, no dissociation is assumed between speaking and speech processing. However, observational data show that children's speech production may go on working properly for quite some time even if there is some hidden impairment in their speech processing abilities. This usually leads to learning difficulties and restricted cognitive operations. Little is known, furthermore, about the expected age-bound working of speech processing performance or indeed about the line of development and its characteristics. In a series of experiments, the authors have sought answers to a number of questions: (i) What level do the speech perception and comprehension processes under scrutiny reach between ages 4 and 9? (ii) What interrelationships do they exhibit? (iii) Exactly how can the fact of development be pinpointed? Test results of a total of 600 children (altogether over fifty thousand data) have been analysed with respect to speech perception and speech comprehension processes. The results have confirmed a particular cooperation among the individual perceptual processes: development can be accounted for in terms of a decrease of interconnections among various types of processing. The older the child is, the more pronounced the mutual independence of perceptual processes is, and that is what underlies the proper functioning of the whole mechanism.

The paper concerns on the child’s and adolescent’s needs to empower his/her inner resources which build one’s stress protection. The review of four psychological conceptions shows importance of individual abilities in problem solving situations. The role of temporal psychic destabilization in the human life is analyzed in the approaches of E. Erikson, K. Dąbrowski, A. Antonovsky, N. Garmezy, E. Werner and G. Richardson. The author describes shortly such concepts as stress vulnerability and resilience, risk factors and protection factors in the field of mental health. The question of mental health is especially important in the contemporary life, that is a great challenge for children’s and youth’s coping abilities in face of stress. Many mental health promotion programs base on empowering of life skills and learning of new, effective stress coping strategies. The positive prophylactics underlines promotion of inner resources development instead of dangerous activities inhibition only. The basic presumption of this positive way of thinking assumes, that early achieved problem and conflict solving abilities build a good preparation to stress coping in the adolescence and adult life.

Europe is developing its 'knowledge society'. It passes from an economy based on traditional factors of production (land, labor, capital) to one in which the major components are information and knowledge. It is well known that the socio-economical and technological development has an important impact on the labor market in developed nations. So, more skills are needed and a flexible and dynamic labor supply. Nowadays, developed and developing nations are increasingly able to deliver high skills at low costs. This paper investigates the achievements of the education systems and the interdependences between education and welfare.

A characteristic feature of modern economy are increasing capital flows, especially in the form of foreign direct investments. Transfer of capital in the form of foreign direct investment is the most dynamic phenomenon of world economy. Foreign direct investment flows between countries, contribute to the economic revival of the countries where the low supply of capital is a major barrier to economic growth. The results of undertaken research showed that British direct investments from the UK have been concentrated mainly in commerce and industry, the share of total trade in the British direct investment shows a growing trend, a steady decline in the share of industry. Industry structure of British investment in Poland is in line with general trends continuing in the structure of foreign direct investment in Poland, observed in developed countries, where most of FDI is invested in the services sector. It was also found that the spatial feature of British direct investment, as investments from other countries, is their location in regions with the largest economic activity and developed infrastructure.

A question arises whether the quality of governance of the “old” EU member states is greater than that of the “new” ones. Intuitively speaking, “old” member states should fare much better. In the article, a measure of the quality of governance is presented, based on the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) for 1996, 2003 and 2010. According to the authors, the quality of governance consists of three components: system persistence, inclusiveness and effectiveness. Findings indicate that most of the “old” EU member states perform much better with respect to the quality of governance compared to their “new” counterparts. Further, the relationship between the quality of governance and some aspects of socio-economic development is examined. In this regard, a strong correlation between most of the elements under consideration is detected. In conclusion, the authors assume that if the EU chooses not to elicit a higher quality of governance of its member states, it is destined to become a melee of states characterised by enormously different levels of democratic potential. As a consequence, inevitably, a question will arise as to the sustainability and sense of purpose of its very existence.

Technology parks constitute one of the most advanced institutional forms contributing to the activation of regional development. This modern organisational form enables wide cooperation among enterprises, for which raising the competitiveness of both the companies and regions in which technology parks function is a purpose. It may be said that parks are a base „of the knowledge-based economy”, and a very opportune offer for foreign investors and Polish ones alike. This article focuses on the presentation of different models of technology parks functioning in Poland.

The article substantiates the fact that in its history, medicine has undergone three transformations: from philosophical medicine to scientific medicine, from medicine as art to medicine as science, and from medicine dealing with an individual to medicine also dealing with communities. The first transformation consisted in the fact that during its development medicine was considered to a lesser degree in philosophical context which determined the way medicine was understood, and it became more independent as natural science and itself affected philosophical understanding of man. The second transformation consisted in the fact that medicine as the art of healing changed into a natural science, and the basic place where it was practised was a clinic, i.e. a place where medicine acted as science without ceasing to be the art of healing. The third transformation consisted in the fact that medicine, initially obviously set on treating individuals, with time started to realize its social aspect. All three processes of transformations finished in the early 19th century. The article presents main theses formulated and substantiated in the book by Maria Nowacka Filozoficzne konteksty medycyny. Ujęcie historyczne od starożytności do końca XVIII wieku, published by the University of Bialystok in 2012.

The article provides sociological analysis of time and space (space-time) and their relations to developmental changes in a rather unusual autobiographical context. In social science, the phenomenon of social space and time is highlighted mainly in the context of themes such as environment, technological development, or changes in social space. The article is based on the historical perspective which enables us to understand better the current modes of using and changing social spaces - human settlements and regions in particular. The author reflects on changes in social space, focusing on the issues of social interactions, urban space, second literacy, cyberspace, and communicative simultaneity. These are discussed in relation to both the global economic crisis and specific Slovak conditions.

The development of knowledge based economy implies a change in resources assessment that influence economic growth. Initially, the material resources including land and capital were all important. The economic transition, globalization, development of IT technologies, growing competition have all increased the impact of non-material resources. Especially important factors became know-how and educated working force. Nowadays a broad understanding of those factors is comprised in one term as knowledge (OECD 2001, p.4). Traditional resources are still important but the main part in creating gross national product is played by knowledge (Fortune 1993 p. 2, Begg and others 1996, p. 36 ). The civilization progress have led to the situation where most people in the developed societies do not work physically but use their intellectual skills (OECD 2001, p 7 ).
