This study aims to examine the underlying causes of the hate against Asian Americans in relation to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Using discourse analysis, the author analyzes interview data collected before the outbreak of the pandemic in the Bay Area of the United States. Anti-Asian sentiment did not start after the beginning of the outbreak. Rather, it has existed in American society, and people in the Asian community have faced prejudice and hate incidents before the outbreak as well. This study examines the discourse in two ways: discourse as practices and discourse as language in use. Through the analysis of interview data, this study aims to 1) shed light on Asian Americans’ experiences and reveal the racism Asians are subjected to; 2) examine how the discourse affects the identity and situation of Asians under a certain dominance; 3) analyze how discourse reproduces systemic violence against Asian Americans. The analysis shows that the same discourse which has positioned Asians as the “other” is reproduced both socially and politically and that is a reason for violence against Asian Americans. However, it is further revealed that Asian people construct their identity through these discourses, by either internalizing or opposing them.

The aim of the study is the analysis of patients' and doctors' discursive representation of mental health problems during the first psychiatric interview. The data comes from 16 initial psychiatric interviews recorded by doctors in three psychiatric hospitals in Poland. Assuming the discursive character of representation the analysis of the data has shown that the representation of illness manifestations in doctors and patients narratives differs. The doctors constructed mental health problems mainly as static and timeless existence of medical symptoms and patients’ traits. Conversely, the patients constructed illness manifestations in terms of action, as dynamic and contextualised processes.Interestingly, the patients deprived themselves of control over the acting illness manifestations. Doctors' static picture of illness manifestations eliminates the possibility of exploring the complicated relationship between patients and their problems. An examination of the way patients construct illness manifestations could be relevant diagnostic information.

This article presents a thorough study of dislocation of superlative inferiority adjective dialogic function. The hypothesis of work stipulates that the dislocation is dialogic because the dislocated theme implies a relationship with a prior utterance by another enunciation. This relationship between two utterances is based on a comparison and makes dislocation a dialogic marker.

Although discourse analysis emerges as a multi-faceted research method reflecting various schools of thought, disciplines and approaches, it is possible to pinpoint some meta-theoretical issues or fundamental assumptions common for most of them. This article aims to investigate different philosophical aspects and theoretical foundations that inform discourse analysis, such as the interplay between epistemological and ontological dimensions or the definition of language itself. Because space does not allow an in-depth discussion of all the theoretical orientations collectively contributing to the development of social constructionist discourse analysis, this paper focuses on poststructuralist, constructivist, and social realist positions, and also attempts to trace the roots of social constructionism in linguistic philosophy, phenomenology, and hermeneutics. Hopefully, this article will provide the opportunity to develop meta-theoretical reflections on discourse analysis, thus striking the balance between the philosophy, methodology and practice.

This paper offers an analysis of ideological discourse from a constructivist perspective, according to which reality is interpreted as the socially constructed product of different agents interacting on an individual, subjective basis in a particular socio-political context, and in relation to a specifi c social action. This theoretical and methodological approach also highlights the importance of the relationship between the fi eld of discourse analysis and those of rhetoric and argumentation (and semiotics, where the discourse is multimodal), and complexity studies. The paper uses data from an ethnographic study of a social collective created a year before the 15M movement: the Cooperativa Integral Catalana (‘Catalan Integral Cooperative’), an eco-social economic initiative based on a new form of self-managed cooperativism.

Wtedy będzie służyć generowaniu wartości ekonomicznej i podtrzymywalności działalności gospodarczej człowieka.

Old theories and economic ideas do not fit the new reality. They cannot be the basis of proper economic policies. The economic model in which efficiency predominates over productivity to the extent that the latter is weakened or even neglected becomes useless in modern world. Economics should return to its tradition of being deeply rooted in moral philosophy. Economics cannot be focused on efficiency and output growth only; it must consider first of all quality of life and sustainable development. The cognitive framework of modern economics and the concepts related to it should contribute to the subjectification of individuals and societies rather than to their objectification. Economics should become a value economics. Then it will serve to generate economic value and to sustain human economic activity.

Artykuł opisuje dyskurs i analizę dyskursu w perspektywie społeczno-pedagogicznej. Pokazuje też dylematy teoretyczne i metodologiczne dyskursu.

The paper contains media discourse analysis from a socio-pedagogical perspective. The paper reveals the theoretical and methodological dilemmas of discourse. The analysis concerns the discourse on reforms of lower secondary schools, published in well-established journals and daily press in Poland. It focuses on the question of how the reform of lower secondary schools was presented by the conservative press (“Gazeta Polska”, “Gość Niedzielny”, “W Sieci”, “Tygodnik Niedziela”) and compares it with the more liberal newspapers and magazines (Gazeta Wyborcza, Polityka, Newsweek). The research utilised elements of press studies, an investigation of the manipulation of public information and techniques of social engineering, connecting communication with power (M. Castells).
