Herder, the author of one of two basic conceptions of nation, the idea of humanity, the ancestor of German romanticism, outstanding theologian, the philosopher of history and writer was born in 1744 in Morąg. Despite the fact he spent there only the first 18 years of his life and that all his most important writing was written apart from this town, the citizens of Morąg commemorate in different ways their outstanding citizen since the half of XIX century. About half of the XIX century, when Herder's works began to appear in print and his fame grew bigger the citizens of Morąg endowed a monument and commemorative plaque on his family house. In 1964 a Museum of Herder was opened, it is currently situated in the Dohn's palace in Morąg.
