This article introduces environmental education as a specific cultural work for exploring and creating meanings, values and practices related to environmentalism. Comparing the national curriculum's discourse of environmental education with the narratives of environmental education practitioners, the study examines ways in which ecological concepts as well as moral issues emerging from the ethics of care for the environment get translated into everyday language and activities. Particular attention is paid to conceptions of environmental knowledge and activities mediating an active involvement of pupils. Drawing on interviews with two groups of practitioners, the paper argues that the practice of environmental education is manifold and varies according to different settings and the interests of teachers and environmental activists. Finally, the author argues for the promotion of pedagogies of place which can advance practice in environmental education and provide a common, and at the same time sufficiently broad, framework for the field.

The interdisciplinary nature of environmental protection dooms most of the presently applied protection methods to failure. It is particularly vital an issue in present times of an ecological crisis which occurred as an effect of tackling environmental problems solely from a technical point of view. A crucial role in eliminating effects and causes of the crisis plays the idea of sustainable development. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out proper educational activities for practical realization of its demands what may end the ecological crisis. The author of the paper presents currently applied educational methods and consequences of their application. Simultaneously he points out a necessity of a holistic approach to education for sustainable development what might be guaranteed, among others, by ecophilosophy. He also highlights a potential of the information technology in realization of educational activities for sustainable development.

The article is an attempt to define the problems of holistic thinking in terms of environmental education. Development of appropriate methodology in this matter, should ensure a better understanding of the environment, but also indicate the mistakes made so far in the process of environmental education. All these activities should create a new quality in the issues of land management. This should lead to more effective crisis management in the natural environment on the ideals of sustainable development. Preparation of appropriate methods of teaching about the resources of the natural environment, consistent with the idea of holistic education, becoming one of the most important goals we are currently facing. Achieving these objectives is necessary in light of the tasks that are put in the idea of sustainable development. Develop a unified methodology for the holistic environmental education, environmental philosophy and environmental ethics, should ultimately affect not only the state of knowledge regarding these issues, but also create future substantive grounds for studies of the process of pro-environmental attitudes.

Both the development of the civilization today as well as the lifestyle of the society based on the consumption do not always involve the behaviours dealing with providing the mental picture of lives according to the laws of nature and its respect. The causes of this situation may result from the variety of educational negligence and the materialistic lifestyle created by the mass media. The level of the consciousness can be significantly improved due to the competent preparation of the future teachers to realize the issues of the ecology and of the “sustainable development” in the educational process. There was the investigation carried out to find out the level of the respondents’ knowledge and to get the comprehensive knowledge on the required problem, i.e. if and to what degree the students of the natural science specializations were prepared to realize the issues of the sustainable development. The number of 297 students was involved in the investigation. They represented the following specializations: biology, geography and chemistry in their universities.
