In the article we study the image of the garden in Jacques Delille’s well known poem Les Jardins (1782). We argue that the structure of Delille’s poetical vision resembles in some aspects the scheme of the 18th century English landscape garden and examine some of its characteristic elements such as: irregular design, a representation of time in space, imitation of nature, the use of landscape painting techniques, etc.

Zapoznając się z historią sztuki ogrodowej, zazwyczaj stykamy się z przekazem historyków sztuki, którzy analizują daty powstania, atrybucje, kompozycje czy przemiany obiektów na przestrzeni dziejów. Celem rozważań jest spojrzenie na sztukę kształtowania ogrodów – na ogród jak na element mody, pewien trend, jak na czynnik zaspokajający społeczne potrzeby, pewne zjawisko w ujęciu socjologicznym. Dużo ciekawsze wydaje się być spojrzenie na ogród jako na miejsce, z pomocą którego właściciel czy twórca zaspokajał własne pragnienia, odzwierciedlał własne dążenia i aspiracje, bogactwo, mógł zamanifestować światopogląd, dobry gust czy dotrzymać kroku panującej modzie. Badanie kompozycji i wyglądu współczesnego założeń historycznych, uzupełnione o analizę materiałów historycznych i ikonografi cznych osiemnastowiecznych założeń ogrodowych, w ujęciu historii sztuki, ale i innych dziedzin życia, ma na celu ukazanie mechanizmu przenoszenia idei i uniwersalności ogrodu angielskiego, widzianych w charakterze, formach i rozwiązaniach przestrzennych, utrwalonych również w dzisiejszych tendencjach projektowych. Wiemy dziś na pewno, że dzięki angielskim impulsom na terenie naszego kraju powstawały piękne malownicze scenerie, a krajobraz wypełniały bogate w nowe doznania kompozycje zagospodarowane egzotycznymi gatunkami roślin. Pewne jest też, że ogród przez kompozycje i wyposażenie, a także wszelkie nowinki ogrodnicze był i jest środkiem do poprawy jakości życia, a moda jest tym zjawiskiem, które najkrócej określa sposób rozpowszechniania się ogrodowych idei i rozwiązań przestrzennych. Implikacje praktyczne: wyodrębnione trwałe elementy kompozycji tworzące kanon ogrodu krajobrazowego. Implikacje społeczne: ogrodowe mody i konwencje jako elementy podnoszące jakość codziennego życia.

When exploring the garden design’s history, we usually meet with the art historians who analyse the date of creation, attributions, compositions or transformations throughout history. The aim of this article is to look at the garden history as a social factor, element of fashion, real trend and to look at the garden as a place where man could accent social needs. It would be much more interesting though to look at gardens as the places, thanks to which the owner or the creator has fulfi lled his own dreams, expressed the strive and aspirations or wealth and who could manifest his or her world view, good taste while also keeping up with fashion. The investigation of composition and the appearance of present landscape gardens, replenished with an analysis of historical materials and iconographic eighteenth-century landscape gardens is to present the mechanism of conveyance of the idea and universality of the English garden seen in the nature, forms, and spatial solutions, reinforced also in today’s project tendencies. Today, we know for sure that thanks to the English impulses, in Poland, beautiful picturesque sceneries came into existence and landscapes were full of many exotic plants, enriched with new experience. We are sure that the garden aspired to improve the standard of life through the composition, its equipment and the gardening news. What is more, fashion has been the phenomenon which determines in the shortest way spreading of gardening ideas and spacious solutions in every stage and epoch. Practical implications: the singled out permanent elements of the composition setting up the canon of landscape garden. Social implications: garden fashions and conventions as the elements raising the quality of daily life.
