The paper focuses on ancient ideas, myths and texts, which has been adapted by Third Reich in order to build Nazi ideology. Hitler’s followers passionately read works of Plato, Plutarch and Tacitus, however, their intention was not to learn about antiquity, but to fit ancient thoughts to National Socialism. The same thing NSDAP tried to do with ancient art, architecture, gestures (Roman salute) and symbols (swastika). Führer’s attitude towards Greek and Roman antiquity was very complex. Psychological term to name this ambiguous relationship is “double-bind”.

Germany – migration as a culture critic?The common roots of the crisis and criticism indicate that the contemporary „migrant crisis” in Europe can also give a fundamental impulse to the criticism of culture-one so far-reaching that it can lay the foundations for a new cultural identity. The subject of this analysis is Germany as a cultural space in Europe and a unique community. Due to its history and both post- and always pre-national character, it is faced with a great opportunity to create a model of social integration yet unseen on the Old Continent. There is one condition: Germany will need to create a relevant cultural myth. This article presents three possible argumentative paths which show that such a scenario is not unlikely. Niemcy – migracja jako impuls do krytyki kultury?Wspólne korzenie kryzysu i krytyki wskazują, że współczesny „kryzys migracyjny” w Europie może stać się także zasadniczym impulsem do krytyki kultury. Krytyki na tyle daleko idącej, że może ona zrodzić fundamenty nowej kulturowej tożsamości. Przedmiotem analiz są tutaj Niemcy, jako kulturowa przestrzeń w Europie, jako szczególna „wspólnota”, która ze względu na swoją historię i post- a zarazem zawsze już przednarodowy charakter, staje przed ogromną szansą stworzenia niewidzianego na Starym Kontynencie modelu integracji społecznej. Pod warunkiem, że uda się im stworzyć odpowiedni mit kulturowy. W artykule przedstawione zostały trzy możliwe ścieżki argumentacyjne, które wskazują, że taki scenariusz nie jest nieprawdopodobny.

Philosophical and Religious Roots of National SocialismUnderstanding the sources of national socialism requires exploring religious and philosophical sources of German culture. Such research was carried out by Bogdan Suchodolski and Leon Halban, whose work was included in this book. Their research shows that it is necessary to refer to axiological issues when analyzing contemporary political phenomena. Filozoficzne i religijne korzenie narodowego socjalizmuPoznanie źródeł narodowego socjalizmu wymaga odniesienia się do religijnych i filozoficznych źródeł kultury niemieckiej. Takie badania przeprowadzili Bogdan Suchodolski oraz Leon Halban, których prace zostały zamieszczone w recenzowanej książce. Ich badania pokazują, że także przy analizowaniu współczesnych zjawisk politycznych konieczne jest sięgnięcie do zagadnień aksjologicznych.

The article is an overview of the reception of fairy tales from the collection Kinder- und Hausmärchen by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm in 1865–1939 in Poland, taking into account the cultural factors infl uencing the form of the analysed sources. The author refers to and comments on reviews, notes, articles, reports, commentaries, publishing catalogues, encyclopaedic entries as well as introductions to the various Polish-language editions of the fairy tales which explicitly tackled the topic of the collection Kinder- und Hausmärchen. The article also contains a terminological suggestion in the form of “Grimmosphere” treated as a structure made up of cultural phenomena and encompassing both Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm’s writings, collections, studies and scholarly theories, and their reception.

During his stay in Australia and Melanesia from 1914 to 1920, the anthropo- logist Bronisław Malinowski frequently experienced dichotomous and contradictory atti- tudes to people, places, and events: the contrast between the ‘civilized’ Australia and the ‘savage’ Melanesia; the background of the Austria-ruled Poland in which he grew up and the British-dominated Australia, Austria’s enemy in the First World War; the emotional tension of simultaneous attraction to two women – Nina Stirling of Adelaide and Elsie Rosaline Masson of Melbourne; the dilemma of the ‘heroic’ versus the ‘unheroic’ related to the war. Most of the dualities of Malinowski’s Australian-Melanesian experience, re- flected in letters to his mother Józefa Malinowska, Elsie R. Masson, and in Diary in the Strict Sense of the Term (1989), were resolved at the end of the period, which became a turning point in his life.

The article is a review of the monograph entitled Argumentationspraktiken im Vergleich by Abdel-Hafiez Massud. The monograph is devoted to a linguistic comparison between argumentation patterns in German and Arabic. The author describes linguistic and extralinguistic measures used in the process of intercultural communication to convince others of our point of view or to persuade them to take a specific step. The publication consists of three thematic parts: argumentation in the online media, argumentation as an intercultural phenomenon, and teaching argumentation skills. The first part focuses on the issue of argumentation patterns preferred by both internauts and companies in the digital world. Argumentative speech acts, such as protesting or apologizing, are discussed on the basis of various text types, for instance German and Arabic protests on Twitter, answers given by companies to customers’ online complaints, and „About us” sections on German private school websites. The second part, which is based on German and Arabic online complaints, is devoted to intercultural politeness and impoliteness in German and Arabic argumentation. The third part is centered around developing argumentation skills during classes in German as a foreign or second language. The value of the monograph is enhanced by the fact that it contrastively thematizes German and Arabic multimodal argumentation styles, which is a new and little explored research field. It is also important that the impact of modern communication forms in the new media on argumentation patterns and practices in both cultures has been considered. Due to its topicality and the presentation of the themes in an original manner, the publication might be of interest to linguists, particularly those researching argumentation.

In Bloch’s works, the world of different meanings, ideas, and nonmusical contexts is of paramount importance. The composer often uses words as a medium intimately entwined with music. The reason for such an artistic declaration is the array of different events in Bloch’s life: his interest in the organ influenced by his father, his adventures with illustrative music, and the relationship with his wife – the excellent Polish singer – Halina Łukołomska. All these elements are the reason why Bloch’s works are inspired by poetical text, images, associations, and aesthetic sensations. Multicultural aspects in Bloch’s works stem from his contacts with German artists and patrons. These collaborations resulted in many outstanding works written for German artists. Some of his works were inspired by Bloch’s friendship with German painter Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein (Denn Dein Licht Kommt/ Albowiem nadejdzie światłość Twoja; Du sollst nicht töten/ Nie zabijaj!; Empor/ Wzwyż). Three of Bloch’s works: Wordsworth Songs, Die Verscheuchte, Anenaiki were primarily inspired by formal and verbal construction and not as much by foreign cultures.
