The people’s participation in decision-making process is a significant part of Europe’s and the European Union’s history. The institution of referendum plays important role in this context. The main aim of this article is to answer the question of how and in what circumstances referenda are used to decide on a possible resignation from the membership in the European Union (as in the case of the UK referendum) or indirectly – a possible exit from the euro zone (as in the case of the Greek vote on the adoption of financial bailout). An important task in this context is to consider the consequences of such referenda – both for individual countries and for the European Union as whole (also in the context of its flexibility). Udział obywateli w procesie podejmowania decyzji państwowych stanowi istotną część historii Europy i samej Unii Europejskiej. Głównym celem niniejszego tekstu jest odpowiedź na pytanie o to, w jaki sposób oraz w jakich okolicznościach wykorzystuje się instytucję referendum w kontekście ewentualnej rezygnacji z członkostwa w Unii Europejskiej (jak w przypadku Wielkiej Brytanii) czy też pośrednio – ewentualnego wyjścia ze strefy euro (jak w przypadku greckiego głosowania w sprawie przyjęcia tzw. pakietu stabilizacyjnego, co w przypadku odmownej decyzji mogło oznaczać wyłączenie Grecji z Eurostrefy). Istotnym zadaniem, w kontekście prowadzonych rozważań, jest odpowiedź na pytanie o konsekwencje takich głosowań referendalnych – zarówno dla poszczególnych państw, jak i dla całej Unii Europejskiej (także w kontekście uelastycznienia jej funkcjonowania).

Głównym celem niniejszego tekstu jest odpowiedź na pytanie o to, w jaki sposób oraz w jakich okolicznościach wykorzystuje się instytucję referendum w kontekście ewentualnej rezygnacji z członkostwa w Unii Europejskiej (jak w przypadku Wielkiej Brytanii) czy też pośrednio – ewentualnego wyjścia ze strefy euro (jak w przypadku greckiego głosowania w sprawie przyjęcia tzw. pakietu stabilizacyjnego, co w przypadku odmownej decyzji mogło oznaczać wyłączenie Grecji z Eurostrefy). In this paper we analyse occurrences of the word Grexit in terms of syntagmatic and textual relations. We aim to show the semantic and pragma-discursive determinations of its social meaning, which appears to be vague and confounding. The study is based on the corpus of press texts published in Le Monde, Libération and Le Figaro between 6 July 2015 (the day after the Greek referendum) and 11 July 2015 (date of the agreement between Greece and its creditors).
