Wealth and poverty in Africa are phenomena perceived in the modern world as the most drastic symptoms of social polarisation. These phenomena are defined by indicators. The following indicators have been used in this article: development index - HDI, poverty index - HPI and also gender index - GDI. However, behind the numbers there is a reality that is far more complicated. Hence, in order to see an objective picture of a society we mustn't forget that all indicators show only an average. The reality is quality of life: actual earnings, place of stay, chances for a professional and social promotion, and barriers in the access to education, welfare, and health care. The article focuses on facts that render it impossible to end poverty permanently.

During the political process leading up to the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 it was decided that the concept which will be used to coordinate spontaneous development processes will be the concept of sustainable development. Since that time, efforts are made to implement this concept through inclusion in the legal regulations and by modelling the development objectives of societies. This process should be accompanied by: 1) a reflection over a direction in which we should go and 2) a question whether actions, carried out in the spirit of sustainable development, really bring us closer to the realisation of this concept. The proposed paper will develop these last two questions focusing on how to get at least a partial response.

W artykule przedstawiono do dyskusji propozycję pomiaru dystansu jaki dzieli poszczególne kraje od celu(-ów) rozwoju zrównoważonego.

Property belongs to fundamental categories that have long been analyzed from different perspectives by representatives of many fields and disciplines. The research issues presented in the article focuses on the analysis of the impact of changes in the ownership structure of the sector banking and insurance for the economic and social development of selected countries, measured by basic macroeconomic indicators. In my deliberations an attempt is made to verify the hypothesis that the ownership structure in the institutions of the sector banking and insurance does not have a significant impact on the development indicators socio-economic, provided that these institutions follow business criteria, not political when making decisions. This hypothesis was verified under research on selected banking and insurance institutions in OECD countries. Down empirical verification of hypotheses derived from the presented problem was used there are literature studies and quantitative research.

Własność należy do fundamentalnych kategorii analizowanych od dawna z różnych perspektyw przez reprezentantów wielu dziedzin i dyscyplin. Problematyka badawcza zaprezentowana w artykule obejmuje analizę wpływu zmian w strukturze własności sektora bankowo-ubezpieczeniowego na rozwój gospodarczy i społeczny wybranych krajów, mierzony podstawowymi wskaźnikami makroekonomicznymi.

Globalization and internationalization of economic activities resulted in the development of multinational companies on an unprecedented scale in the history. Changes in the organization of production and management, which gave effect of increasing productivity and maximize revenues. There were, however, negative effects of these processes: depletion of a large portion of the world’s population, expansion of the disparities between the countries of the rich North and the poor South and degradation and over – exploitation of the environment. The development of corporate social responsibility, responsible investment and promoting Fair Trade – especially during an economic crisis – can change the rules governing the world today. This crisis has focused unethical behavior of transnational corporations, the lack of accountability for the decisions, excessive desire to get rich at any cost, ordinary theft and fraud. Changes in the Amartya Sen’s and Mahbub-ul-Haq’s Human Development Index – HDI takes into account the different types of inequality (which are often negative effects of business activities) shows that our world has much to gain if we concentrate our eff orts on defeating these social disparities. The article presents three possible scenarios for the development of the global situation on the world markets with reference to the economic crisis: positive, neutral and negative variant for transnational corporations – a major player in the arena of international relations. It is worth remembering demands of the new economy - the economy of social development – oriented to increase the standard of living and wealth, and which stimulates economic growth and social development affects the reduction of social inequalities.

Social development causes a comprehensive increase in the quality of human capital. It is necessary for the society to achieve a higher civilization level. A sufficient level of national income is needed to achieve it, which will ensure financing of widely available public services. This income can be generated by increasing economic freedom, which affects faster GDP growth. Current researches show that economic freedom also have a positive impact on other indicators of social development, such as education and life expectancy. Higher incomes, generated by a more liberal economy, leads to higher budget income, and thus also to the improvement of the quality of public services.

This paper provides an introduction to the enhanced study of the relationships occurring between the choice of the country, to which Polish citizens emigrate, and the level and quality of life in the country of emigration. In the first part of the article the author focused on the major causes of departures of Poles out of the country and the effects of emigration for Poland. Next, the directions of departures of Poles to the EU countries for a temporary stay longer than three months in the period 2004–2012 have been analyzed. In the last part of the paper the author made the preliminary analysis of the relationship between the number of people emigrating to a given country and its level of the socio-economic development. In order to determine the level of the development the Human Development Index has been used.
