The author analyzes the transformation of the most ancient Christian tradition, the transformation described in the Letter to the Hebrews. It consists in the fact that the death and resurrection of Jesus are a consecration of the High Pries of the New Covenant. The crucified and resurrected Christ is an anti-type of the High Priest of the Old Covenant. A High Priest is a Mediator and Leader who may not only show the way to the House of the Father. As the only-begotten Son of God He has the right to usher others into it (cf. J 14, 6-9). Through His passion and death Jesus had been transformed and became the perfect High Priest. Thus ”made perfect” (Heb 2, 10), that is, crucified and resurrected Jesus, was made the Head of people and their Leader to salvation. In other words, God made Him the High Priest. The passion and death of Jesus were in fact an exceptional and unique kind of consecrating the High Priest of the New Covenant.

Study of terms connected with High Priest, both in Masoretic Text and in the LXX, gives the possibility to present the role, activity and exceptionality of High Priest. It is seen through the specific High Priest’s vestments, having particular functions. An expression of Priest’s dignity is a special blessing. These elements are presented in the context of biblical Judaism. The difference of the dignity and the High Priest’s function of Jesus Christ is presented by two groups of texts from Heb. The groups are build with two terms common with the LXX, ἀρχιερεὺς and ἱερεύς, both having a new theological connotation.

Odmienność godności i funkcji arcykapłańskiej Jezusa Chrystusa została zaprezentowana poprzez zestawienie w dwóch grupach tekstów z Hbr. Grupy te utworzone są z dwóch terminów wspólnych z LXX, ἀρχιερεύς i ἱερεύς, posiadających jednak nową konotację teologiczną.

The author shows how the Jewish community in Jerusalem is scrupulousabout their own religion and their allegiance to God and His Temple. On theother hand, 2 Macc reveals a Hellenistic orientation by viewing the Templeas that of the city, as is shown by the progression city-place-Temple (cf. 3:1-3)and by reference to the high priest of the city (cf. 3:9).Our section (3:14-22) focuses on the author’s intention to involve theauditorium in the action, as he highlights the tragic emotion experienced. The classification of roles in the description of the population of the cityis interesting. The priests in their formal attire form a distinct group withthe greatest attention (two verses) given to describing the grief of the highpriest. The males participate in the public supplication (3:18), while themarried women express their grief with bared breasts and sackcloth aroundtheir waists, symbolising their role as child-bearers.The unified narrative conforms to the general pattern of a deity’s defenceof his temple: attackers approach, the defenders ask the deity for help and thedeity responds. There are many examples of this type of narrative such asthe defence of Delphi by Apollo against marauding Persians in 480 B.C.E.,the story told by Herodotus (8:35-39).
