The crowd-sourcing approach should be implemented into a new historical geoportal of Poland due to its increasing potential in WebGIS. Registered users will be able to acquire spatial data from various map series. As it requires feature class harmonization, a common symbol classification should be proposed. It will be based on chosen topographic maps of Polish land from the 19th and 20th centuries. Feature classes derived from archival maps will be standardized and reclassified, but with no information lost. This will be done in four steps which require: data acquisition, map content harmonization, feature class typification and attribute table elaboration. In addition, four methods of data harmonization can be distinguished: symbol sequence, semantic analogies, spatial relations and a combined method. The paper covers the elaboration of two thematic layers - roads and railways based on three topographic maps (Austrian 1:75 000, German 1:100 000, Russian 1: 126 000).

The array of archival maps from the 19th and 20th centuries is very large and, in order to assess their reliability for a particular analysis, some kind of evaluation form must be used. The proposed evaluation form comprises both formal and quantitative criteria, enriched with the maps’ elaboration circumstances, which may influence their reliability. These factors are also applied at both the spatial and attribute levels of information. Guidelines include: the scope of content, the map’s mathematical precision, the descriptive information correctness, the time reference of the content, and the information transfer efficiency.

This paper discusses the challenges to a wider access to archival cartographic materials. The aim of the study is to present and evaluate the preparation of historical maps for presentation in geoportals. The authors use the example of two maps from the early twentieth century, without information on the spatial relations, to trace the course of their processing into a form that allows them to be published in spatial data structures. The descriptions of subsequent stages include theoretical and practical aspects of the procedure. Particular attention was paid to the factors affecting the accuracy of spatial fit that affects the ability to use them further.

The article compares the scope of topographic maps of Polish territory annexed by Russia, prepared at the beginning of the twentieth century: Kielce and its surroundings. The comparison includes military topographic maps prepared by every country taking part in the partition of Poland – Russia (Dwuwiorstówka), Austria (Spezialkarte) and Prussia (Karte des Westlichen Russlands). These maps have very much in common – their scale, date and purpose of their release were similar. The analysis includes the comparison of, for example, lengths or areas of maps’ topographic elements and the visual comparison of maps and their symbology keys.

W artykule porównano treść map topograficznych opracowanych na początku XX w., przedstawiających fragment obszaru pozostającego pod zaborem rosyjskim – Kielce i okolice. Przeanalizowane zostały topograficzne mapy wojskowe państw zaborczych: rosyjska Dwuwiorstówka, austriacka Spezialkarte i niemiecka Karte des Westlichen Russlands. Mapy te cechuje wiele podobieństw: zbliżona skala, podobny okres i cel powstania. Przeprowadzona została analiza elementów topografii: sieci komunikacyjnej, zabudowy, budynków, obiektów przemysłowo-gospodarczych i warstw przyrodniczych pod względem wizualnych różnic, kluczy znaków oraz obiektywnych miar, takich jak długość czy powierzchnia.

In this paper there was presented the problem of national identity development in the Eastern Galicia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The used source materials concerned with thedistribution of population speaking Polish and Ruthenian (Ukrainian) languages and declaring themselves as practising Roman Catholic or Greek Catholic religion within the administrative districts. The data came from the population censuses carried out in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in the years 1890, 1900 and 1910. Based on the calibrated maps of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria and the census data, geostatistical analysis was performed using GIS software. The obtained thematic maps of language and religion distribution in the Eastern Galicia enabled to distinguish the Polish, Polish-Ruthenian and Ruthenian areas. Spatial interpretation of the results was preceded by historical study of the examined area.
