The research focus is the examination of key aspects of the land use for the detection of urgent problems in the context of sustainable development. The comparison, data analysis and logical access methods have been used in the study, and the recommendations on the improvement of the situation in the longer term have been developed. Land use management, legal side of regulation and the efficiency of land use are essential guidelines for the sustainable development of the territory in the country.

Land cover as a factor affecting the structure and modifying the dynamics of a landscape system

The key objective of the study is to analyse structural characteristics of the landscape from the viewpoint of the structure’s durability, characteristics and speed of change. The research focused on the area surrounding Płock. In the analysed period (1987-2010) slight changes were detected with regard to the land cover, though they were significant in terms of the natural environment. No single dominant process determining land cover change was identified. Fluctuations prevailed (producing a slightly different picture in each microregion), with a fixed pattern maintained. Distribution, shape and spatial location of land cover types are only partly determined by land lie and habitat quality. Fragmentation of the terrain is relatively high, which reflects intense land use, at the same time indicating opportunities to preserve the wildlife and vegetation typical for agrocenoses.

Based on statistical and cartographic analyse a survey of land use was presented partly on example of share of orchards in the structure of land use in the Lubelskie voivodship. The survey was conducted applying method of relative deviation. Results were presented in the form of cartograms which as typical map of themes are the source of information on space. On the base of orchards presented that prominence of features resulting from relative evaluation shown truth about region where the surveyed occurrence is showing as privileged or unprivileged. This situation is inclined to search for determinants of this condition and after its finding gives a possibility to present directions of influence agreed with planned development of region. This situation stresses practical use in elaboration of development strategy, regional policy, planning works, spatial economy and other activity of human in the environment. (original abstract)

Extensive medieval and Early Modern field systems have been preserved in English countryside. The article aims at achieving synopsis on English research for the purpose of explaining similar traces of past agricultural activities in the Czech Republic. In England, majority of preserved field systems consist almost exclusively of ridge and furrow, whilst in the Czech Republic strip lynchets and field boundaries are mostly detected. However, local ridge and furrow is mentioned many times in Bohemian documentary evidence. Comparison with British field systems already helped to put Czech research into a broader context (Dohnal 2003; 2006). The author therefore recommends employing British research in explaining Bohemian archive and iconographical materials on local ridge and furrow. The article describes the main results of exploring English ridge and furrow, its appearance, date of origin, purpose and variations. Other remnants of medieval landscapes (strip lynchets) are discussed as well. Special attention is paid to “reversed S” shape of many medieval fields, hardly explained phenom-enon related probably to complicated maneuvering with plough teams.
