Thesis/purpose of the article – The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of modern library and information services for users of Polish public and academic libraries. These have emerged due to the transformations resulting from technological progress, new document formats, innovative ways in which information circulates, evolving environments, and user needs, as well as social phenomena such as fragmentation of society, population ageing and a very low level of readership in Poland. Research methodology – Analysis and critical review of literature as well as content-related assessment of web services were performed. Major outputs/conclusions – The outline of library services offered by Polish public and academic libraries provided in this article is not exhaustive. However, it can reasonably lead to the conclusion that the library offerings in Poland in the 2nd decade of the 21st century is incomparably more extensive than even a dozen years back. The social and political transformations following 1989, Poland’s membership in European structures, the evolution of information and communication technologies, changing user needs and social metamorphoses as well as solutions developed in other countries being implemented have all largely shaped the current approach to the role of libraries. Libraries extend their fields of activity, entering areas previously set aside for cultural institutions. By offering a wider range of services for very diverse groups of recipients, they are becoming increasingly rooted in the public space.

Contemporary libraries of the twenty-first century are characterized by a marked fluctuation of roles and functions commonly ascribed to them. Librarians are expected to be capable of anticipating them and addressing them appropriately in order to satisfy the requirements set up by users. This article is an attempt to discuss the most important changes that have hitherto been done and to indicate those areas of the activity of research, academic, public and, to a lesser degree, school libraries in which those changes will be particularly pronounced. Anticipated roles and tasks within the management and access to resources, building up own electronic resources and their processing, library space, embarking on tasks hitherto not regarded as strictly ''library" tasks as well as the most important changes in the author's view such as those to be introduced in user services, in-service trainings, education and propagation of knowledge are discussed in the article. The author believes that the new functions, on par with those already existing, should be subjected to actual users, but also to potential ones, even deeper than before. This should effect in creating the library environment as a ''meeting place", some kind of a social space to perform entirely new functions superimposed onto traditional ones in the library information. The new functions will include performing new cultural, educational, social, artistic and communal tasks carried out with a co-operation with other libraries, scientific, educational and cultural instructions. Additionally, the problem of changes in work force management, so vital in the supposed and anticipated transformation of the library and its functions, is evaluated and discussed.

Thesis/Objective – The author discusses a concept of Library User Experience (LUX), intending to define a potential of concepts based on the development of library users’ experience and build a template of LUX application in the design of innovative library services. Method – The method of literature analysis and critique was used. The author defined the current state of research on LUX phenomenon based on the search results obtained via Google Scholar search engine (selected due to the broad scope of the databases available). The material analyzed included only works in Polish or English published between 2010 and 2017. Results – The author described LUX concept, compared LUX principles and features with those of UXD (User Experience Design) design concept, experience economy and design concepts such as service design and design thinking and, last but not least, she prepared a template of LUX application in the design of innovative library services, primarily information services. Conclusions – The analysis delivered by the author shows a high usefulness of LUX-based approach in the development of innovative library services.

Teza/cel – Przedmiot artykułu stanowi koncepcja Library User Experience (LUX). Metoda – Zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa.

Thesis / Objective – The article is an in-depth reflection on the use of triangulation based on the analysis of the social impact of public libraries in mazowieckie region. Research methods – The qualitative part of the research was done following the procedures of constructivist grounded theory and data was collected with IDI. The quantitative part was performed as random sample survey. Results – The use of libraries can be described as the relationship connecting librarians and library users on various, interconnecting levels. Taking into consideration the opinion of the library users the most important elements of this relationship are the amount of free time available, alternative sources of benefits and reciprocal involvement. If a larger community is involved, the methods and frequency of library use become heavily influenced by socio-demographic variables. Conclusions – The convergence of both types of data enabled the researcher to reach an in-depth understanding of the issue researched and draw more detailed conclusions.

Wyniki – Korzystanie z bibliotek można opisać poprzez relację łączącą bibliotekarzy i użytkowników. Wnioski – Zbieżność obu rodzajów danych umożliwiła lepsze zrozumienie problemu badawczego i pogłębienie wniosków.

The author discusses a new tool for researching levels of library anxiety – Polish Library Anxiety Scale (P-LAS). The scale in question consists of 46 statements grouped in six types: barriers related to library staff, affective barriers, barriers related to lack of knowledge about libraries, barriers related to discomfort felt in libraries, barriers related to lack of requested documents in libraries and technological barriers. P-LAS is more suitable for research conducted in Polish libraries than its foreign counterparts and better adjusted to contemporary library reality than Library Anxiety Scale (LAS).

W artykule zaprezentowano nowe narzędzie do badania poziomu tzw. lęku przed biblioteką (ang. library anxiety) nazwanego Polską Skalą Niepokoju Związanego z Korzystaniem z Biblioteki (P-LAS).
