The task of the literary translator is commonly understood as comprising of two major elements. One is that of a translation proper - that is, a “conversion” of an original text into a new linguistic version, and the other being that of an agent or promoter who wants to attract attention of publishers, readers and critics. The question is whether the latter of the two remains justifiable in the changing book market. The article, based on a questionnaire conducted among a group of active translators, argues that the role of a translator as a promoter remains important only in very particular cases.

Leopold Mazac Publishing House became once a symbol of the success of young Slovak literature as well as well-established brand. However, after the year1948 the publisher's name almost disappeared from the Czechoslovak book industry history. Although Jan Smrek, the publisher's friend and long-term collaborator, did his best in the 1960s to remind us of Mazac's activities related to Slovak literature, a complex evaluation study has not yet been written in our country. In spite of the fact that Mazac was the very first publisher to dispel the long-lasting myth of Slovak literature being unprofitable and sparked the interest in its new as well as older literary production. The present study is concerned with Leopold Mazac Publishing House foundation, history and contribution to Slovak culture. It presents little-known facts related to the subject mainly relying on archival materials deposited at the literary archive of the Museum of Czech Literature, the National Museum Library Archive in Prague and the Art and Literature Archive in Martin.

The analysis covers the situation and tendencies concerning traditional paper, on-line and combined publications, including publications of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine, and the proportion between the above. Selected information on the topic is addressed, occurring lately in the Ukrainian mass media and devoted to issues of future proportion between on-line and paper publications, whether or not on-line publications should be free of charge, and ways to make profitable the on-line component of combined publications. Analysis of the NAS publications shows that the overwhelming majority of journals published by the NAS of Ukraine have already had own web-pages or pages on publishers' sites, displaying annotated contents or full-text on-line archives. Journals of the NAS of Ukraine have already had most of the features required for commercial publication and are ready for licensed commercial distribution of on-line versions. Factors are identified, which promote creation of combined publications in Ukraine (absence of legal rules on on-line periodicals, increasing costs of printing & publishing materials, the need for registration of the paper version of a periodical, dissemination of Internet-technologies etc.).

The authors address some of the issues covered by the Act no. 167/2008 Coll. on periodicals and agency news (the Press Act), where positive law changed due to the intervention of the legislator, in particular where positive law was specified due to jurisprudence of Slovak courts and the European Court of Human Rights. The contribution of court jurisprudence to the creation of positive law in various areas covered by the Press Act can be evaluated differently. In addition, court jurisprudence creates a picture of the state of awareness of the participants of legal relations regulated by the Press Act of their rights and obligations. Issues of suitability and adequacy of justification of solution of certain issues by courts of lower instance will have to be addressed by the Supreme Court, whose decisions relating to the application of the Press Act remain rare.

Burinist Johann Blaschke, born in Bratislava and professionally active in Vienna, contributed to a series of publications, popularizing contemporary literature together with editions of antique literature on mythology, art or history. Facts from the artist's work and life - especially those on relationship between illustrators and publishers - indicate that book illustration at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries is relevant not only to art historians but also to those who research the book market of the epoch.
