Adequate staffing of university studies with qualified academics was completed thanks to the reimplementation of three-stage university education during the post-socialist restoration of higher education in the Czech Republic. Thus, the doctoral degree of education has been attained by more than four-fifths of academic staff, with over two-fifths of them being aged 50+. The current course of university studies, including doctoral study programs, is influenced by their focus on educational and research strategy. With regards to the regulations for graduating in doctoral studies, doctoral candidates act as homo oeconomicus following neo-liberal educational policy. The conditions for doctoral studies, namely, those in educational sciences, thus lead to paradoxes caused by the current higher educational policy. The objective of the paper is to analyze the neoliberal set-up of the higher education policy of the Czech Republic in the field of doctoral studies in educational sciences in particular and its possible impacts in the area of labor-market integration of graduates and university training of academics.

Przedmiotem zainteresowania autorek w niniejszym artykule jest autonomia jednostek w samokierujących się zespołach – rozpatrywana jako pozorna sprzeczność. Artykuł ukazuje złożoność relacji w zespole, jak również wskazuje możliwości oddziaływania na wyniki osiągane przez zespół. Efektywność zespołu rozpatrzono, uwzględniając złożoność relacji wynikającej ze zróżnicowania poziomów autonomii jednostki i zespołu jako całości, oraz scharakteryzowano czynniki moderujące tę relację. W artykule zaprezentowano także sposoby zarządzania pojawiającymi się w obrębie funkcjonowania zespołów paradoksami oraz wskazano możliwości wykorzystania tkwiącego w nich potencjału.

The main interest of this article is to explore autonomy of individuals in autonomous work teams, or the paradox of autonomy in self-managing work teams. In this article the authors: 1) show relationship’s complexity in such work teams; 2) indicate possibilities of impacting and influencing the results (on team and individual level of effectiveness) taking into consideration the relationship’s complexity that stems from different levels of autonomy (variables and moderators); and 3) determine the importance of the described paradox for management practices.

The article focuses on human resources management and motivational paradoxes explanations. A presentation of complexity of motivational processes and the identification of contradictions in motives of human's actions, as well as a consideration of paradoxical thinking consequences for the human resource management and motivation function realization are a crucial aims of this article. The management literature review also allowed to identify a couple of strategies of managing paradoxes, which are also pointed out and characterized in this text.

The paper defends the argument that the Resemblance Paradox (RP), or the problem of the ‘under-determination of meaning’, and the Rule-Following Paradox (RFP) are two sides of the same paradox threatening meaning from opposite extremes. After presenting the case, the paradox is reconsidered anew and the supposition that the threat is a pervasive one challenged.

Celem pracy jest prezentacja znaczenia problematyki tymczasowości, identyfikacja najważniejszych form organizacji tymczasowych oraz uwarunkowań ich tworzenia i rozwoju. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiono najważniejsze definicje i kategorie organizacji tymczasowych. W drugiej części, na podstawie narracyjnego przeglądu literatury, zaprezentowano dotychczasowe główne tematy badawcze (czas, zespół, zadania, kontekst), a także zaproponowano nowe wątki: paradoksów w zarządzaniu tymczasowymi organizacjami oraz roli czasu konstruowanego społecznie, wskazując na potencjał tych zagadnień jako inspiracji dla przyszłych prac badawczych.

The aim of this paper is to present the significance of temporality, to identify key forms of temporary organizations as well as to describe the conditions of their creation and development. In the first part of the article the most important definitions as well as the categories of temporary organizations have been demonstrated. In the second part, on the basis of literature research, the review of main research issues has been delineated. Moreover, two new plots have been indicated: paradoxes in the management of temporary organizations and the role of socially constructed time. Their potential as inspirations for further research has been underlined.
