The author discusses the ideas of New Historicism that can be used in research on literary translation. It should be pointed out that the cultural perspective being obligatory after “cultural turn” in the humanities makes the translator’s competence developed. What is more, the translator becomes a mediator who is responsible for creating the image of the Alien. Elfriede Jelinek’s Burgtheater is used as the work that exemplifies the discussed issues.
