Gryf Publications Ltd. was established in 1946 in the milieu of Gen. Władysław Anders to carry out the tasks of the independence emigration and the political purposes of the circle. Gryf achieved a position of one of the most important emigration publishing houses. The unstable financial situation, however, constantly necessitated the search for solutions to ensure the survival of the publishing house.

Firma Gryf Publications Ltd. została powołana w 1946 r. w kręgu gen. Władysława Andersa, aby realizować zadania emigracji niepodległościowej oraz polityczne cele środowiska. Gryf osiągnął pozycję jednego z najważniejszych wydawnictw emigracyjnych. Niestabilna sytuacja finansowa jednak stale wymagała szukania rozwiązań zapewniających przetrwanie wydawnictwa.

W tekście zaprezentowano uwarunkowania sytuacji obywateli polskich w brytyjskim systemie zabezpieczenia społecznego od momentu przystąpienia Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Zawarto w nim analizę danych statystycznych, przedstawiających strukturę imigrantów przybywających do Wielkiej Brytanii po otwarciu granic. Przedstawia się w nim warunki, jakie stawiane są imigrantom w celu otrzymania świadczeń British State Pension oraz Child Benefits. Artykuł powstał na podstawie referatu prof. Simona Robertsa, wygłoszonego podczas międzynarodowej konferencję pt. „Reemigracja obywateli polskich – problemy prawne i społeczne”, która odbyła się w dniu 5 września 2014 r. w Centrum Dialogu Społecznego „Dialog” im. Andrzeja Bączkowskiego w Warszawie.

The paper presents conditions of the situation of Polish nationals in the British social security system since Polish accession to the European Union. It presents an analysis of statistical data showing the structure of immigrants to Britain after the borders were opened to workers from the “new” EU Member States. The development also includes a representation of the conditions that are imposed on immigrants in order for them to receive such benefits as British State Pension and Child Benefifi ts. The article is based on a lecture by Prof. Simon Roberts delivered at an international conference entitled “Re-emigration of Polish citizens – legal and social issues”, which took place on 5 September 2014, at the Andrzej Bączkowski Centre for Social Dialogue.

W artykule ukazano działalność Polaków w Wielkiej Brytanii w XX wieku, począwszy od zakończenia II wojny światowej, kiedy liczna grupa polskich uchodźców i weteranów osiadła na terenie tego kraju. W roku 1947 w celu wyłonienia reprezentacji polskiego społeczeństwa w Wielkiej Brytanii powołano Zjednoczenie Polskie. W tym samym czasie powstały również Zjednoczenie Polek (1946) i Towarzystwo Pomocy Polakom (1946). Pokazane zostało zaangażowanie brytyjskiej Polonii w kontekście historii Polski, które realizowano poprzez organizowanie protestów antykomunistycznych,  prowadzenie różnego rodzaju akcji informujących o sytuacji w Polsce, organizowanie pomocy materialnej, wspieranie Polski w momencie transformacji ustrojowej, wspieranie przystąpienia Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Na przestrzeni dekad Polonia w Wielkiej Brytanii zdołała powołać liczne organizacje kombatanckie i społeczne, polskie szkoły, budować kościoły w celu zachowania polskiej kultury na obczyźnie.

The article presents the activity of Poles in Great Britain in the 20th century, beginning with the end of World War II, when a large group of Polish refugees and veterans settled in the UK. In 1947, the Federation of Poles was established to represent Polish community in Great Britain. The Association of Polish Women (1946) and the Relief Society for Poles (1946) were also formed at the same time. The article shows the involvement of the Polish community in Great Britain in the context of Polish history. This involvement included the organisation of anti-communist protests, carrying out various actions to inform people about the situation in Poland, organising material aid, supporting Poland at the time of the system transformation, and supporting Poland’s accession to the European Union. Over the decades, the Polish community in Great Britain has managed to set up numerous veterans’ and social organisations, Polish schools, it also built churches in order to preserve Polish culture abroad.

Artykuł przedstawia historię Divine Mercy College w angielskim Fawley Court, męskiej szkoły średniej założonej w 1953 roku z inicjatywy ks. Józefa Jarzębowskiego kontynuującej tradycje szkół zakładanych przez polskich uchodźców i weteranów II wojny światowej. Główną ideą tej placówki było promowanie poczucia polskości i wartości katolickich, przy równoczesnym zapewnieniu uczniom solidnej edukacji. W ciągu 32-letniej historii, szkoła wykształciła ponad tysiąc uczniów i może poszczycić się zasłużonymi dla Wielkiej Brytanii absolwentami.

This article presents the history of Divine Mercy College at Fawley Court, England, a secondary boarding school for boys founded in 1953 on the initiative of Rev. Józef Jarzębowski, which continued the tradition of schools established by Polish refugees and World War II veterans. The main idea of this establishment was to promote a sense of Polishness and Catholic values, while providing students with a solid education. Over its 32-year history, the school has educated more than a thousand pupils, and can boast distinguished alumni for the UK.

The UK’s decision to leave the EU and its political consequences are potentially endangering migrants’ agency. The article shows how “destabilising events” are affecting the plans and strategies of Polish lifestyle migrants and their agency. The analysis is based on a qualitative study conducted one year after the Brexit referendum, using in-depth interviews with long-term Polish post-accession migrants, whose mobility was predominantly lifestyle-driven. While referring to Archer’s morphogenetic approach and the concept of social anchoring, the aim of the research is to shed light on factors that might influence Polish migrants’ decision-making process concerning their future mobility or settlement in the UK. The study’s findings lead to the conclusion that in the face of “destabilising events”, future migration plans and the agency of individuals are related only to a limited extent to structural factors. Although the referendum prompted migrants to reflect on and verify their life projects, personal factors seem to be of more importance than political events, and they are what will shape migrants’ future actions.

Decyzja Wielkiej Brytanii skutkująca opuszczeniem Unii Europejskiej mogła potencjalnie w znaczący sposób wpłynąć na sprawczość (agency) jednostek. Celem artykułu jest znalezienie powiązań między planami i strategiami migracyjnymi polskich migrantów lifestylowych, a wynikami głosowania oraz sprawczością jednostek w oparciu o wywiady pogłębione z polskimi migrantami poakcesyjnymi przeprowadzone w rok po referendum w sprawie Brexitu. Odwołując się do podejścia morfogenetycznego Archer oraz wykorzystując koncepcję zakotwiczania dokonano opisu i analizy czynników wpływających na decyzje dotyczące mobilności przestrzennej lub zadomowiania się Polaków w Wielkiej Brytanii. Wyniki badania prowadzą do wniosku, iż wydarzenia polityczne związane z Brexitem w ograniczonym stopniu powiązane są z przyszłymi planami migracyjnymi oraz sprawczością jednostek. Choć referendum skłoniło badanych do refleksji i weryfikacji dotychczasowych zamiarów, to czynniki osobiste okazały się determinować ich przyszłe decyzje.
