The text comments about the relationship between doctor and patient of psychiatric hospital as shown in selected modern Russian fiction. This topic, that has been present in Russian literature since the 19th century, being a vital component of mental illness theme, is even more valid nowadays. The analysis of the discussed novels leads to the conclusion, that age plays no significant role in depicting the above-mentioned relationship. Furthermore, regarding “youth” and “old age” as a pair of predicates, it confirms the thesis on continuous (either consciously or unconsciously) positive doctor- and negative patient-presentation.

The aim of the present article is to analyse the intertextual contexts invoked by the titles of two works: Tatyana Tolstaya’s Sonia and Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s Sonechka. The name of the protagonists on the one hand refers the reader to the ideal of So phia – the Eternal Feminine, which appeared in Russian culture through the influ ence exerted by the philosophy of Vladimir Solovyov, and on the other hand in vokes the model of femininity that appeared in Russian literature primarily thanks to Sonya Marmeladov, who embodies humility, kindness, forgiveness, and the ready embrace of suffering. Juxtaposing these two images in the works analysed creates an interesting dialogue within the philosophical-literary tradition.

Статья посвящена анализу рассказа Людмилы Улицкой «Алиса покупает смерть» в контексте мотива надежды. Новый сборник рассказов русской писательницы сильно пронизан философскими вопросами человеческого бытия и небытия. Очень актуальная тема надежды сильно резонирует в одном из рассказов из этого сборника, о чем свидетельствует приведенная ниже статья. В рассказе «Алиса покупает смерть» Улицкая использовала типичные для ее творчестваприемы. Главные герои рассказа - «маленькие люди», показанные в момент пересечения границы между жизнью и смертью. Наш анализ показал, что тема надежды, часто используемая в литературе, нашла многоплановое отражение и в творчестве русской писательницы. Главной движущей силой рассказа является любовь во многих ее проявлениях, а приближающаяся смерть дает надежду на новую жизнь в прямом и переносном, более философском смысле.

Artykuł koncentruje się na analizie opowiadania Ludmiły Ulickiej „Alisa kupuje śmierć” w kontekście motywu nadziei. Nowy zbiór opowiadań rosyjskiej pisarki jest mocno przesiąknięty filozoficznymi pytaniami o człowiecze istnienie i nieistnienie. Bardzo aktualny motyw nadziei silnie wybrzmiewa w jednym z opowiadań z tego zbioru, o czym świadczy poniższy artykuł. W opowiadaniu „Alisa kupuje śmierć” Ulicka posługiwała się konwencjami typowymi dla jej twórczości. Głównymi bohaterami opowiadania są „mali ludzie”, ukazani w momencie przekraczania granicy życia i śmierci. Nasza analiza wykazała, że motyw nadziei, często używany w literaturze, znalazł odzwierciedlenie również na wielu płaszczyznach w twórczości rosyjskiej pisarki. Główną siłą napędową opowiadania jest miłość w jej wielu przejawach, a nadchodząca śmierć daje nadzieję na nowe życie w sensie dosłownym i przenośnym, bardziej filozoficznym.

The article focuses on the analysis of Lyudmila Ulitska's short story „Alice buys death” in the context of the theme of hope. The Russian writer's new collection of short stories is strongly imbued with philosophical questions about existence and non-existence. The current theme of hope strongly resonates in one of the stories in this collection, as evidenced by the following article. In the story „Alice buys death”, Ulitskaya used conventions typical of her work. The main characters of the story are “little people”, shown at the moment of crossing the border of life and death. Our analysis proved that the theme of hope, which is often used in literature, was also reflected on many levels in the work of the Russian writer. The main driving force of the story is love in its many manifestations, and the coming death gives hope for a new life in a literal and a figurative, more philosophical sense.
