Ostatnie lata przyniosły ogromny postęp naukowy i technologiczny widoczny na współczesnym polu walki, pozwalający na wprowadzenie nowych systemów uzbrojenia i strategii prowadzenia działań zbrojnych. Oprócz wyzwań, jakie niosą ze sobą nowe środki i metody prowadzenia wojny, żołnierze stają przed coraz większą potrzebą wykorzystywania swoich umiejętności językowych, uczestnicząc w międzynarodowych operacjach wojskowych. Ujednolicenie kompetencji językowych jest warunkiem nie zbędnym dla prawidłowego funkcjonowania w międzynarodowym środowisku wojskowym, przyczyniając się do wzmacniania partnerskiego współdziałania z siłami NATO. Poniższy artykuł miał na celu omówienie roli egzaminów STANAG w rozwijaniu kompetencji językowych żołnierzy RP, co znajduje odzwierciedlenie w ramowym programie szkolenia językowego dla Polskich Sił Zbrojnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem doskonalenia sprawności mówienia. Artykuł podkreślił wkład systemu testowania językowego według STANAG 6001 w rozwój interoperacyjności z wojskami sojuszniczymi, przedstawiającgłówne fazy tego procesu. W końcowej części autorka podjęła próbę ustalenia, w jakim stopniu ten proces jest faktycznie osiągalny.

In recent years, scientific and technological advances have changed the modern battlefield, giving rise to new weapons systems and battle strategies. Apart from the challenges posed by new means and methods of warfare, soldiers are faced with an increasing need to rely on their language skills while joining multinational operations. To succeed in an international military environment, bridging the language gap is a must since it contributes to building and strengthening interoperability with NATO forces. The following article is intended to discuss the role of STANAG tests in developing language competence of Polish soldiers as reflected in the language training framework programme for the Polish military, with a focus on the speaking ability. Most importantly, the article highlights the contribution of language testing according to STANAG 6001 to developing interoperability with the Allies, presenting the main phases of the process. In the final part, the authoress attempts to determine to what extent this contribution is really made.

Język angielski stał się lingua franca współczesnego świata, językiem globalnym. Proces globalizacji wpłynął również na rosnące zapotrzebowanie na naukę języka angielskiego. Zapotrzebowanie obejmuje nie tylko język ogólny, ale także język specjalistyczny, w tym język środowiska wojskowego. Język angielski stał się również językiem interoperacyjności w NATO. Sojusz Północnoatlantycki zawsze zwracał szczególną uwagę na znajomość języków obcych, czego wyrazem było m.in. powołanie BILC International Language Coordination Office oraz rozwój standardów językowych obowiązujących we wszystkich państwach członkowskich – STANAG6001. Edukacja językowa w siłach zbrojnych RP odbywa się zgodnie z wytycznymi Sojuszu. Prawidłowe użycie języka wojskowego i jego rozumienie stwarza dobre warunki dla powodzenia administracyjnych i operacyjnych działań w środowisku wojskowym. Dzięki odpowiedniemu zastosowaniu terminologii można uniknąć potencjalnych nieporozumień lub błędnych interpretacji działań wojskowych. Edukacja językowa jest jednym z elementów polityki językowej w dziedzinie bezpieczeństwa.

The English language has become the lingua franca of the contemporary world; a global language. The process of globalisation has also influenced the increasing demand for learning English. The demand involves not only general language but also language for specific purposes, including language of the military environment, Military English. English has also become the language of interoperability in NATO. The North Atlantic Alliance has always paid particular attention to the knowledge of foreign languages, which was expressed, among others, by the establishment of the BILC International Language Coordination Office and the development of language standards applicable to all Member States, STANAG 6001. Language education in the armed forces in Poland follows the Alliance’s guidelines. The correct use of military language and its understanding creates a successful administrative and operational military environment. On account of appropriate application of terminology, potential misunderstandings or misinterpretations of military activities can be avoided. Language education is one of the elements of language policy in the field of security.

The subject matter of this article is the challenges faced by military language students, particularly in the context of analytical writing and the specifics of the military language testing system (STANAG 6001). The main research method used in this paper is a literature review and theoretical analysis in order to discuss and analyse the challenges faced by military language students in the context of analytical writing, as well as potential solutions such as Project-Based Learning (PBL). As such, it does not present original empirical research or data collection. Instead, it draws upon existing research, educational theories, and expert opinions to support its arguments and proposals. A central theme within the paper is that of "educational baggage" and the idea that language learners bring into the classroom their experiences of previous learning environments, be that schools or private courses. Finally, the article suggests that a fully integrated syllabus should be written for military English students that would incorporate all the elements of Project Based Learning and involve all teachers on a given course in a truly integrated manner.
