This article discusses the subject of sacrifices among the Slavs using textual, archeological and ethnographic evidence. Although it is a well-known fact that there are not many textual sources concerning early medieval Slavic culture and religion, some aspects of their customs and rituals can be reconstructed by referring to folkloristic materials. According to many scholars, Slavic folk culture (especially that of Eastern Slavs) has preserved some traces of pre-Christian practices, but it is important to maintain a careful approach to ethnographic sources and avoid far-reaching interpretations of archeological evidence in their light. In spite of methodological difficulties, by critically combining different categories of sources it seems possible to offer new interpretations of Slavic beliefs

Podstawą materiałową artykułu są dane dotyczące stereotypów etnicznych pochodzące z różnych języków słowiańskich (zwłaszcza ich dialektów), a także folkloru, obrzędów i wierzeń. Celem artykułu jest charakterystyka mechanizmów współdziałania języka i niejęzykowych kodów kultury. Autorka zauważa, że współdziałanie języka z kodami kulturowymi może przebiegać w różnych kierunkach: 1) wektor współdziałania może być ukierunkowany od niejęzykowych form kultury ku językowi; 2) niektóre motywy mogą paralelnie funkcjonować zarówno w języku, jak i w niejęzykowych kodach kultury na zasadzie parytetu, i wtedy ustalenie wektora współdziałania jest niemożliwe; 3) bywają sytuacje, kiedy wektor współdziałania jest ukierunkowany od języka ku kodom niejęzykowym (w tym wypadku język sam wytwarza konteksty kulturowe, wykorzystując obecne w jego arsenale środki fonosymbolikę, atrakcję i inne). W artykule pokazano, że bez względu na rodzaj technicznych związków między kodami, każdy z nich ma swoje specyficzne sposoby opracowania i reprezentacji informacji etnokulturowej. Badanie związków językowokulturowych może pomóc w interpretacji niejasnych faktów zarówno kodu językowego, jak i kodów niejęzykowych, oraz w całościowych rekonstrukcjach wyobrażeń funkcjonujących w określonych sferach tematycznych. Możliwości takiej rekonstrukcji pokazane są na przykładzie zestawu danych językowo-kulturowych, odnoszących się do pola tematycznego „prace rolnicze”.

The article is based on data from Slavic languages (especially from their non-standard dialects), as well as from folklore, customs and beliefs containing ethnic stereotypes. The aim of the study is to investigate the mechanisms underlying the linguistic and the non-linguistic, cultural sphere. The interdependence of the two may be realized in various directions: 1) from non-linguistic cultural codes to language; 2) parallel motifs in language and culture; 3) from language to non-linguistic codes of culture (in which case language itself creates cultural contexts with its own means, such as sound symbolism). Regardless of the type of the links between the codes, each of them has its own specific ways of representing ethnocultural information. An inquiry into the linguocultural relationships may be of real assistance when certain incomprehensible linguistic or non-linguistic facts are investigated. It also provides for the reconstruction of images in a thematic sphere in which the stereotype is actualized. Possibilities of such reconstruction are considered in reference to the thematic field “agricultural work”.
