The present paper focuses on the syntactic description of verb-second-sentences from a contrastive view (German-Italian). The study is based upon a corpus of texts written by Italian native speakers of the course German Language for Tourism at the University of Pisa. This paper is composed of two parts: the first one aims at pointing out the main grammatical structural differences between Italian and German declarative sentences as far as the position of the verb is concerned; the second one shows the results gained by analysing the corpus of written texts referring to the position of the verb in declarative sentences in order to provide a successful methodological approach to verb-second-sentences in the didactics of German as foreign language

Obwohl das Merkmal Person zu den grundlegenden grammatischen Merkmalen gehört und der Eindruck besteht, dass alles darüber ausgesagt wurde, sieht es aber aus, dass einige Gegebenheiten noch genauer behandelt werden müssen. Dieser Beitrag untersucht, ob die deutschen Nominalphrasen, die als Kern kein Personalpronomen haben, auch andere Merkmale als das der 3. Person tragen können. Es wird gezeigt, dass Anredeformen nur die 2. Person beanspruchen. Demzufolge wird die (nur) 3. Person Annahme vorgeschlagen, die in allen deskriptiven Grammatiken deutscher Sprache akzeptiert ist, zu modifizieren. Genauer gesagt, sollte das Merkmal 2. Person für jede Nominal­phrase vorgegeben werden, die die charakteristische (Vokativ-) Intonationskontur in der gesproche­nen Sprache hat oder mit einem bestimmten (Vokativ-) Interpunktionszeichen in der geschriebenen Sprache erfolgt. Somit könnten die Schwierigkeiten bei der Darlegung von Kongruenz/Rektion ver­mieden werden.

Although the feature Person belongs to the basic grammatical categories and the impression is that everything has been said, it seems, however, that some matters must be treated in more details. Con­cretely, this article will investigate if German noun phrases which heads are no personal pronouns, could hold other person feature than the 3rd person which is specified in the lexicon. It will be shown that quasi-vocative noun phrases hold 2nd person only. Consequently, proposal is to modify 3rd person only assumption which is accepted in all descriptive grammars of German language. Specifically, the person feature should be fixed to 2nd person feature for any noun phrase which has a characteristic vocative-intonation contour in the speaking language or is followed with a specific punctuation for vocative noun phrases in written language. In this way all possible problematic issues related to syntactic relations (agreement/government) and noun phrase structure could be avoided.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie problematyki dotyczącej struktury/treści, tzw. chunks (fragmentów tekstu) oraz gramatyki w tekstach kandydatów na studia, dla których język niemiecki jest językiem obcym. Analizie i ocenie według ustalonego katalogu kryteriów poddane zostaną teksty napisane przez kandydatów przystępujących do egzaminu na studia (tzw. DSH), którzy uczęszczali na kurs przygotowawczy,oraz tych, którzy przystąpili do egzaminu bez takiego przygotowania. Wyniki analizy pozwolą sformułować zalecenia pomocne do ustalenia podstawowych ram treściowych dla tego egzaminu.

This article investigates the challenges inherent within the content (structure), word chunks, and grammar in the written part of the German language university entrance exam (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang, DSH) taken by prospective students whose native languages are not German. The author analyses samples supplied by two groups of candidates: test takers who have attended a DSH preparatorycourse and test takers who have not. The results of her analysis allow her to develop suggestions for modifications to the content format of the DSH preparatory course.

Der vorliegende Beitrag setzt sich zum Ziel, Herausforderungen in den Bereichen Struktur/Inhalt, Chunks und Grammatik in den Texten von Studienbewerbern mit Deutsch als Fremdsprache zu untersuchen. Hierfür werden die Schreibprodukte von Lernenden in der Deutschen Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) nach einem Kriterienraster analysiert und ausgewertet, wobei zwischen Prüflingen, die zuvor einen DSH-Vorbereitungskurs besucht haben, und denjenigen, die sich selbstständig auf die Prüfung vorbereitet haben, unterschieden wird. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse lassen erste Empfehlungen für die inhaltliche Gestaltung der Prüfungsvorbereitung formulieren.

The goal of this study is to investigate the interplay of discourse and syntax, as it can be observed in the use of null objects, in the language development of a child who starts to acquire German at the age of nine years in a naturalistic setting. The study shows that children at such an age can profit from the knowledge already acquired in their first language. After nine months of exposure, the child under study uses null objects similarly to monolingual children. The acquisition of null objects in a second language can be impeded at an early stage, however, due to the different syntactic restraints for the use of null objects in the first and second languages.
