Models for the Spatial Development of Medium-Sized Cities in Poland in the Era of Transformation as Exemplified by Puławy, Płock and Siedlce

Post-1990, urbanisation in Poland took on new forms and features not very clearly on display in urban space before that time. Alongside a dynamic process of suburbanisation encompassing ever-greater areas around large cities, there has also been a phenomenon attesting to the occurrence of similar trends of the expansion of built-up areas with urban functions into areas around small and medium-sized urban centres. Taking shape are new wedges of urban construction pushing their way into suburban and rural areas. These are arising along access roads leading between the smaller cities and the large regional centres. It is not only services and industry that are located along these (as was shown in the classical model after Hoyt), since there are also estates of single-family or multi-family housing. The aim of the work described here has thus been to analyse the processes referred to as they are exemplified by the Polish towns or cities of Płock, Siedlce and Puławy. The comparative method deployed in this work is to lead to a proposal for a model of the development of Poland's urban centres of medium size.

The relics of old industry are the rich source of knowledge and making them available to the wide circle of visitors is the manifestation of escuing and protecting the industrial culture heritage. Using these objects for touristic purposes is a big chance of development of urban-industrial areas and frequently becomes the main determinant of the development of the areas the splendour of which has already passed. The study shows many successful examples of modernization and revitalization of antique postindustrail objects within Europe and Poland. Keeping the old form of the objects and introducing their modern usage for touristic purposes enables to preserve the characteristic elements of urban landscape. It enables to preserve the cultural identity in strongly industrialized cities and regions and has a stimulating influence on the functioning of economy both locally and nationally.

Celem opracowania jest ukazanie przemian i aktualnego poziomu umiastowienia oraz podstawowych przyczyn tych przeobrażeń. Dokonujące się zmiany uchwycono dzięki odniesieniu się do dawnego układu administracyjnego istniejącego od 1998 r. (49 województw). W końcowej części artykułu skupiono się na stanie istniejącym (16 województw), wykorzystując zweryfikowane dane statystyczne za 2002 r.

A target of the elaboration is to present changes in the process of urbanisation in the scale of the country and by voivodship breakdown existing before territorial administrative reform and newly created in 1999. Substantial transformations of this process have been created considering quantity changes measured with respect of percentage of urban population and urban indicator, as well as quality changes reflecting policy of country. The survey covers particular years for reason of comparing and composing possibilities of described issues in similar time intervals, but in the context of two different economic systems. The first decade confirms residue of strong developing post-war urbanisation, but in the 90s in a view of visible stressing of overpopulation of big cities and under development or collapse of small cities; quality aspect of urbanisation was disseminated. The article presents results of surveys related to some socio-demographical as well as financial and economic phenomena changes connected with the sub-urbanisation of Szczecin. The survey covered Szczecin City as well as adjacent communes. Results confirm the strong developing, but irregular, sub-urbanisation. In particular, Dobra and Kołbaskowo communes are affected by very strong sub-urbanisation expansion. In Goleniów, Gryfino, Kobylanka and Police communes, the process is noticeable, but not so significant like in the two earlier named communes. Stare Czarnowo commune does not suburbanize.
