The Church Fathers did not neglect to give attention to widows and articulate what they believed was their role in the Church. Modern studies are quite abundant focusing mainly from the New Testament, the early Church, and the Middle Ages. One era that has been marginalized is widows in sources from late antique Roman and Suevic-Visigothic Hispania. Early Christian writers are noted for background only, the focus here are the conciliar texts dating from the fourth through seventh centuries.

Problematyka dotycząca ciała na pewno należy do najbardziej aktualnych we współczesnej kulturze, a tym samym także teologia musi ją uwzględniać w swoich poszukiwaniach, jeśli ma uczestniczyć w tym, co najbardziej zasadnicze dla człowieka. Tradycja teologiczna zwraca uwagę, że także postać Maryi, szczególnie Jej dziewictwo, zawsze wpływała na pogłębione rozumienie ciała i jego przeznaczenia, a tym samym na osobowe i moralne odniesienie do niego. Wobec współczesnej, pilnej potrzeby odbudowania godności ciała zachodzi m.in. wyraźna potrzeba powrotu do kultu maryjnego i do naśladowania cnót Maryi, ponieważ w tej perspektywie można uchwycić i właściwie kształtować relacje między duchem i ciałem, między mężczyzną i kobietą, a tym samym oddziaływać na kulturę, czyniąc ją bardziej przyjazną człowiekowi.

The question concerning human body certainly can be counted among the most urgent issues in the modern culture. Therefore theology as well has to include it among the fields of its research if it wants to participate in a most vital discussion for contemporary man. Theological tradition focuses upon the figure of Mary, and especially on Her virginity, emphasising that She has always ameliorated the profound understanding of the body and its destiny and concurrently its personal and moral context. In the face of contemporary, urgent need for the restoration of the dignity of the bodythe return to Marian devotion and following Her virtues is definitely required. Only in this perspective it is possible to grsap and properly cultivate the relation between the body and the soul and further between man and woman, and by the same token to influence the culture making it more friendly for people.

The article focuses on the issues of theological correctness of conformity of the Dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Polish theological literature from 1950 to 1965 is the source material for the analysed issue. Having studied it thoroughly one could notice that Mariologists proved the Assumption on the basis of other Mariological dogmas such as Mary's Motherhood of God and the Perpetual Virginity. What is more, they justified the truth discussed in the article referring to the phrase „full of grace” and to the relics of the Virgin Mary. Analysing the conclusions of Polish Mariologists, one may notice that they have been based on the Holy Bible and on the tradition of the Church. This in turn leads to the enrichment of Mariological research by the teachings of Fathers and doctors of the Church. In their analysis they also derive from the Munificentissimus Deus which is the repository of knowledge of the discussed issues. It is also worth noticing that the Polish Mariology is open to the foreign theological thought, and what is more, it uses its richness by presenting its own thought. This is a significant part of the developement of the disccused issues.

W artykule została poruszona problematyka teologicznych racji odpowiedniości dogmatu Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Materiał źródłowy analizowanej kwestii stanowi wybrana polska literatura teologiczna w okresie od uroczystego ogłoszenia Wniebowzięcia (1.11.1950 r.) do 1965 r. Zgłębiając ją można zauważyć, iż mariolodzy dowodzili faktu Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny w oparciu o inne mariologiczne dogmaty takie jak Boże Macierzyństwo i Dziewictwo. Oprócz tego uzasadniali zgłębianą w artykule prawdę na kanwie zwrotu „łaski pełna” i relikwii Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Badając wnioski polskich mariologów można zauważyć, iż są one budowane w oparciu o Pismo Święte, a także o Tradycję Kościoła co doprowadza do ubogacenia naukowego warsztatu mariologicznego o nauczanie m. in. Ojców i doktorów Kościoła. W swych analizach opierają się także na Konstytucji Munificentissimus Deus, która stanowi ogromne bogactwo dla zgłębianej w artykule problematyki. Oprócz tego, badając polską mariologię, zauważa się, iż nie zamyka się ona na zagraniczną myśl teologiczną ale twórczo czerpie z jej bogactwa prezentując swoje tezy, które z kolei stanowią wkład w rozwój zagadnienia.

St. Jerome deals with many themes in his Letter 22 to Eustochium, but the author focuses on virginity interpreted as a constant struggle for the Lord and he analyses the Biblical foundations of this exposition. He first tries to clarify St. Jerome’s purpose as he wrote this letter, that is, the articulation, in the light of the Bible, on the one hand of the reason and beauty of life in virginity, and on the other hand the difficulties and renunciations that have to be constantly undertaken so as to persevere in this state. He then discusses the pertinent Biblical references, primarily from the New Testament and in particular from the Gospels and the letters of the apostle St. Paul. He analyses their use, the chosen expressions and terms (sometimes taken from the vocabulary of sportsmen and soldiers) and their literary and doctrinal context. He then lists concrete elements of the spiritual struggle undertaken by the virgin for Christ (prayer, meditating of the Sacred Scriptures, silence, fasting, remaining at home, various mortifications pertaining to the body and spirit), as the Lord has personally given us proofs of supreme love, poverty and perseverance in the withstanding of sufferings. Finally, in the context of the continuously actual debate about virginity and marriage, he questions the value of the discussed Letter 22 of St. Jerome for this theme within a Biblical, Christological, ecclesiological and eschatological perspective.Keywords: virgin, virginity, chastity, marriage, struggle, body, soul, unmarried state, concupiscence, poverty, patience, suffering, renunciation, mortification, fasting, continence.

Autor opracowania wybiera z wielu zagadnień poruszanych w Liście 22 św. Hieronima temat dziewictwa rozumianego jako ustawiczna walka dla Pana i analizuje fundamenty biblijne tej idei. Próbuje najpierw ustalić cel, jaki przyświecał św. Hieronimowi, piszącemu ten list, czyli ukazanie, w świetle Biblii, z jednej strony racji i piękna życia w dziewictwie, z drugiej zaś trudów i wyrzeczeń, które trzeba nieustannie podejmować, aby wytrwać w tym stanie. Zajmuje się następnie odnośnymi tekstami biblijnymi, pochodzącymi głównie z Nowego Testamentu, zwłaszcza z Ewangelii i z listów św. Pawła apostoła; analizuje ich użycie, wybrane zwroty i wyrażenia (pochodzące niekiedy ze świata sportowców i żołnierzy) oraz ich kontekst literacki i doktrynalny. Pyta na zakończenie, w kontekście ciągle aktualnej debaty dotyczącej dziewictwa i małżeństwa, o znaczenie omawianego Listu 22 św. Hieronima dla tego tematu w perspektywie biblijnej, chrystologicznej, eklezjologicznej i eschatologicznej.
