Einige chronologische Bemerkungen zum Leben und Werk Brunos von QuerfurtZusammenfassungDer Lebenslauf und das Werk des hl. Bruno-Bonifatius von Querfurt weisen nur wenige sichere Anhaltspunkte auf. Hierzu zählt auf jeden Fall seine Reise von Kiew ins Land der Petschenegen, deren Beginn von W. Meysztowicz auf den 22. Februar 1008 datiert wurde. Bisher wurde dieses Datum von der Forschung übernommen. Der vorliegende Beitrag lehnt den von Meysztowicz ermittelten Tag ab und schlägt stattdessen den 29. Juni 1008 vor. Die Verschiebung des Reiseantritts um über vier Monate hat weitreichende Folgen sowohl für die Chronologie seiner letzten Lebensjahre als auch für die Datierung seiner Werke. Die weiteren Ausführungen sind dementsprechend der Darstellung dieser Folgen gewidmet. Some remarks on the chronology of life and works of Bruno of QuerfurtAbstractThe chronology of life and works of St. Bruno of Querfurt has few certain points of reference. One of the most certain is his expedition from Ruthenia to the Pechenegs’ country, dated by W. Meysztowicz to 22 February 1008 and accepted by later literature. The present paper both rejects the date proposed by Meysztowicz and suggested another date, 29 June 1008. Changing the date of his expedition to the Pechenegs by over four months has far-reaching implications for both the chronology of the last years of Bruno, and for dating his works. The remaining part of the paper is devoted to initial discussion of those implications.

W Liście do króla Henryka Brunon z Kwerfurtu zdaje relację ze swojej misjonarskiej działalności. Opowiada m.in. o wyprawie do Pieczyngów i o pobycie u „władcy Rusów”. Brunon wprawdzie nie wymienia imienia ruskiego księcia, ale przyjmuje się, że chodzi o Włodzimierza Wielkiego. Nad tym „ruskim” epizodem w życiu grafa z Kwerfurtu zazwyczaj przechodzimy do porządku dziennego. Kwitujemy bardzo często jednym zdaniem: „Brunon bawił na Rusi ponad miesiąc”. Czy rzeczywiście pobyt u Włodzimierza był gościną? Czy misjonarz dobrowolnie przybył do ruskiego władcy, czy został do niego siłą doprowadzony? Niniejszy tekst jest próbą nowego odczytania relacji Brunona. Autorka, analizując kluczowe, jej zdaniem, słowa oraz porównując sprawozdanie misjonarza z jego sposobem opowiadania o innych wydarzeniach, dochodzi do wniosku, że Brunon w dyplomatyczny sposób przekazuje czytelnikowi informację, iż spotkało go na Rusi coś w rodzaju aresztu – ograniczono jego swobodę w poruszaniu się i przetrzymywano „wbrew woli przez jeden miesiąc”.

In his letter to king Henry, Saint Bruno of Querfurt gives an account of his missionary activity. Among other things, he writes about his expedition to Pechenegs and about his visit to the „lord of the Rus”. Although Bruno does not mention the name of the Russian prince, it is assumed he meant Vladimir the Great. This episode in Saint Bruno’s life is usually taken for granted and often summed up in one sentence: „Bruno stayed in Rus for over a month”. Did he really stay at Vladimir’s as a guest? Was it a voluntary visit or was Bruno brought by force? The present article is an attempt of a new interpretation of Bruno’s account. After analysing key words and comparing Bruno’s account with his way of relating other events, the author comes to the conclusion that – in a diplomatic way – Bruno confers to his reader the information that in Rus he underwent a kind of arrest – his freedom was restricted and he was „kept for one month against [his] will”.

The author hypothesizes that the corpses of Bruno of Querfurt (+1009) and his companions were buried among the Rus‘, possibly in Svyatopolk’s city of Turov. Such burial and cult could have influenced both the placing of the tomb of Vladimir and decorations of the St. Sophia church.
