Artykuł jest próbą nieantropologicznej lektury mówiącego o zwierzęcym cmentarzu fragmentu Pana Tadeusza. Odczytywany w świetle wiedzy indygenicznej Mickiewiczowski matecznik okazuje się pod wieloma względami reliktem animistycznej wyobraźni, w której ludzie i nie-ludzie mają podobny ontologiczny status. Czerpiąc z zakorzenionej w bezpośrednim doświadczeniu ludowej wiedzy, poeta antycypuje również całkiem współczesne przyrodoznawcze rozpoznania – te o „duchowym życiu zwierząt” oraz ich zbieżnych z ludzkimi mortualnych zwyczajach.

The article is an attempt to non-anthropological read the fragment of Pan Tadeusz about an animal cementery. In the light of indigenous knowledge, Mickiewicz’s “matecznik” seems to be a relic of the animistic imagination, in which human and non-human persons have similar ontological status. Basing on the folk tradition rooted in the direct experience, the poet also anticipates quite modern natural science diagnoses – about the “spiritual life of animals” and their convergent with human mortual customs.
