The article aims to represent a recently recovered anthology about Bulgaria printed in Poznan, Poland, in 1938. Inspired by Diana Crane’s idea of the invisible colleges the authors retrace the intercommunication within a circle of researchers interested in promoting Bulgaria abroad. The revisited and almost unknown until now biography of the main editor of the book – Metody Konstantinov – is an avenue of approach to the specific paradigm that connects all the participants in the anthology. A short summary of the anthologised articles encompasses several main linguistic problems concerning the retrieving of the texts.

This article is meant to present and verify historical objects discovered in Kwiatków (Gaj) village by Seweryn Tymieniecki (1847-1916). These relics (related to the Lusatian and Przeworsk cultures) are a good pretext for presenting the lawyer from Kalisz who was also an avid fan of archaeology. On top of a collection of interesting artefacts, Tymieniecki described equally intriguing burial forms. He made a name for himself in literature on the subject owing to his activity in the field followed by numerous publications in which he presented the effects of his surveys in a professional and competent way. It took 130 years before Tymieniecki’s name appeared again in archaeological literature. However, this time it was an entirely different quality of research, with respect to the methodology as well as the results of the work.

This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book България – страна на розите, published in 2018. The book consists of three parts – a phototypical copy of the first Polish edition of the collective book from 1938, a translation of this edition into Bulgarian language with biographies of the authors of the texts and several studies, dedicated to Metodi Konstantinov (the 1938’s edition editor), to Polish-Bulgarian political and cultural relations in the late 1930s and their local repercussions in Poznań and last but not least – to the language of the first edition and its translation and re-translation. The aim of the publication – to remind the first edition of the book, to make it accessible for Bulgarian readers and to restore the memory about its authors and editors – is thoroughly fulfilled. Moreover, an additional advantage of the book is that it makes its readers more aware of the difference in Bulgarians’ self-representational practices before and after the Second World War.

This paper presents new options how to study women’s activism under socialism in Czechoslovakia. The new history of women’s lives, experiences, and movement under socialism can be traced by analyzing the previously untapped documents: archival records (collection of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Women’s Union deposited in the National Archive in Prague; collections of the local committees of the Czechoslovak Women’s Union deposited in state district archives); organization’s official magazine: Reporter of the Czech Women’s Union; and importantly oral history interviews with the members of the Czechoslovak Women’s Union who participated in the organization before 1989. This paper indicates how this robust combination of primary sources – enriched by oral history interviews – can show the rich history of women’s activism under socialism.

The article is an attempt to examining again the three first movies of Andrzej Wajda: Generation, Canal and Diamonds and Ashes, regarding archival protocols and production issues more then stict artistic or auteur factors. The inspiration was both production culture perspective and New Historicism of Stephen Greenblatt. The text shows how many additional factors played decisive role in realising those classical movies and how much the movies were connected with plays for cultural power and dominance in those historical reality. In effect we can observe specific kind of dispersive authorship in which film authors hasn’t full control on the final effacts of the movie, for example its social impact and audience recepton.

In the southern part of the Woświn lake there is a vast peninsula called “the Devilish Causeway” by local people. On the peninsula there is located an archaeological site that was excavated by Alfred Rowe in 1934. During the research a stone construction measuring 10 x 11 m was found. Function of this feature had aroused controversy but in the end, W. Filipowiak’s hypothesis that these were the remains of a Slavic cult construction was accepted in the literature. Further analysis however of the archive materials has shown that the stone construction found by A. Rowe is not a Slavic cult construction but an underpinning of a wooden one- or more-storey building such as those built by medieval knighthood within motte-and-bailey castles or so-called “manor houses on a mound”. It is likely that its owner was a representative of the wealthy family von Wedel.

An extremely important element of biographical studies is the choice of methods for collecting data, such as personal documents, letters, diaries, memoirs and notes (i.e., archival sources). The vast majority of sources are stored in the state archives, by the church, universities and various public and private institutions (e.g., ministries, workplaces, schools, hospitals, insurance companies), or in private collections. Students of pedagogy and of history conducting biographical studies encounter a variety of obstacles in their archival queries. The intention behind this article is to help them in their biographical investigations, identify obstacles and threats, and make them aware of the types of archival sources they may encounter. It is an instructional publication for students, PhD students and employees who are unfamiliar with archives.

The figure of Henryk Goldszmit (Janusz Korczak) is the topic of many bibliographical publications. In the face of a lack of strictly scholarly works in this field, texts, in which the boundary between fact and author’s interpretation is very fluid, seem to gain more importance. The aim of the article is to point out the issues stemming from this, and to highlight the importance of bibliographical works based on archival research and reliable criticism of sources. Juxtaposing the first chapters of An Attempt at a Biography by Joanna Olczak-Ronikier with a documentary take on the genealogy of the Old Doctor allows one to state that even those narratives, which are the most suggestive and attractive to the reader, cannot fill the gaps in historical knowledge. Without referring to the archives, verifying arguments regarded as obvious, or without a philological reflection on the texts by Korczak, the chances to correct the errors which build up and shape the contemporary reception of the legacy of Henryk Goldszmit, diminish.

The article refers to the concept of queer space and its application in research. It discusses the theoretical and empirical struggles observed during the research project that aimed at mapping queer spaces in Kraków. In the first part, we present the broader context and main research stages, i.e. archival as well as interviews based on sketch maps and the use of ArcGIS tools. We then reflect on the process of mapping queer spaces, highlighting definitional problems, the contextualization of the issue, and the frequent incompatibility of themes addressed in the literature with local conditions. The discussion is an opportunity to consider local reinterpretations of queer spaces, derived from our research process and the narratives of our interviewees.

Artykuł odnosi się do koncepcji kłirowej przestrzeni (ang. queer space) i jej zastosowania w badaniach. Omówiono w nim teoretyczne i empiryczne zmagania zaobserwowane w trakcie realizacji projektu badawczego, którego celem było zmapowanie przestrzeni kłirowych w Krakowie.

This targeted stylistic, bibliographical, and archival investigation casts a major light on a relevant portrait of a woman by the Polish painter Olga Boznanska, highlighting its rich exhibition and collection. The recent appearance in a Polish auction of a similar painting by Boznanska leads to the hypothesis that the subject of the painting-whose identity still remains a mystery-is the same in both paintings.

Starogard Łobeski is a settlement situated about 8 km to the east of Resko on the east bank of the Rega river. Undoubtedly the area’s most interesting archaeological site from the Early Middle Ages, this well-preserved stronghold is located about 2 km to the south of Starogard. The feature has been known since at least the 1930s, and it has been excavated twice archaeologically. The first excavations were carried out by Adolf Stubenrauch in 1891 with further excavations being undertaken by Hans-Jürgen Eggers in 1938. This paper presents the results of this research which hitherto has not been widely published.
