It is a fact: Encyclopedia’s text (in 17 volumes) is read without considering the plates (in 11 volumes), but it could be useful and relevant to take an example of a strong interaction between text and plates. The example that is choiced is a passion : astonishment. To compare its presentation in text and plates, three particular plates from DESSIN are studied and all the articles about the passion of astonishment and surprise are examined.

The aim of the study was to answer the question whether the words “zaskoczenie” [phon. zaskɔˈʧ̑ɛ̃ɲɛ]- “surprise” and “zdziwienie” [phon. ʑʥ̑iˈvjɛ̇̃ɲɛ]- “astonishment”, which are treated in the Polish language as synonyms, possess a fixed pattern of application, and whether the colloquial context of using these words differs in terms of its emotional valence. The theoretical background for this investigation was the triadic approach to language cognition that includes perception, conceptualization and symbolization, and corresponding to this approach concept of mental representation of emotions. The obtained results have shown that people tend to use the word “zaskoczenie” to describe emotions that occur in positive situations, whereas the word “zdziwienie” is more frequently applied in negative situations. The observed emotive connotation of the investigated words has been explained by the rules of phonetic symbolism and implicative meaning of the words preserved in the popular/colloquial understanding.

This paper analyzes interjections expressing astonishment in dialogues from contemporary fiction. It describes them on the syntactic level, where they are not incorporated in clauses as clause elements, but rather, they function as a means of clause-formation. Interjections do not express ideas, but emotions of astonishment (e.g. surprise or amazement) with which other emotions are connected. A detailed classification of the individual interjections is presented on the phonetic (graphic) and morphological levels from both formal and lexical semantic points of view, and the considerable variability of the analyzed interjections is commented on.

The central issue of the philosophy of Abraham J. Heschel is the issue of religion. It is understood as a bond between man and God. God is a mystery, but not the highest being, philosophical absolute. He is a mystery that astonishes man. This astonishment is not an act of cognition. It is rather a condition in which man discovers that it's not he who asks for God - it is God who asks for man. He is incomprehensible, He cannot be named nor described. He is infinitely close to man and worried about his fate. Those who discover such God live only to respond to His closeness. A mutual harmony is born - the most deeply understood religious bond.

Das zentrale Anliegen der Philosophie von Abraham J. Heschel ist die Frage der Religion. Sie wird verstanden als eine menschliche Beziehung zu Gott. Gott ist ein Mysterium, und nicht das höchste, philosophische Absolute. Sie ist ein Geheimnis, das bei dem Menschen den Zustand des Staunens erwacht. Das Staunen ist kein kognitives Handeln, es ist vielmehr ein Zustand, in dem der Mensch entdeckt, dass es nicht so sehr der Mensch nach Gott fragt, aber der Gott nach dem Menschen. Er ist jemand unvorstellbar, man kann Ihn nicht nennen, nicht beschreiben. Er ist unendlich nah an den Mann und er sorgt sich an sein Schicksal. Derjenige, der solch einen Gott entdeckt, lebt bereits nur dazu, um die Nähe des Gottes zu erwidern. Also so ist das gegenseitige Bündnis geboren, zutiefst verstandene religiöse Bindung.
