The paper analyses figurative applications of phrases containing words connected with human seeing (e.g. the verbs see, look, espy, nouns like sight, look, eye and adjectives such as blynd). It shows the motivation for metaphoric expressions used by Chaucer to express his thoughts and visions in a most vivid and precise way and their further development in the language system. The analysis is based on the data obtained from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (Ellesmere MS), the Oxford English Dictionary online and the Middle English Dictionary. As regards its theoretical basis it refers to Lakoff–Johnson’s theory of cognitive metaphor.

The paper sets out to investigate the interplay between image and text with reference to chosen cognitive models in order to pinpoint the image of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bilateral nature of memes will be discussed in relation to the cognitive linguistics framework, in particular the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) (Lakoff and Johnson 1980, Kovecses 2002, Forceville 1996, 2008, 2009), Frame Semantics (Fillmore 1988) construal (Langacker 1987, 2008), blending theory (Fauconnier and Turner 2002), Discourse Viewpoint Space  (Dancyngier and Vandelanotte 2017).

Religious Healing and the Asclepius Cult: A Case of Placebo Effects

This paper suggests a cognitive approach to the Asclepius cult which may throw light on the supplicants’ personal experiences of healing during the ritual of incubation. In particular, the possibility of healing at the Asclepius sanctuaries is presented as a potential result of the patients’ placebo responses. The prerequisites of placebo effect as determined by Nicholas Humphrey are traced in the wider social and conceptual contexts of Greek antiquity and the specific religious context of the Asclepius cult. In this framework, it is argued that personal experiences of people, social information about the Asclepius’ healing powers and the confirmation of this information by human doctors would have influenced how people “lived” an illness or a disease infliction, “appropriated” the religious beliefs in Asclepius, and experienced cures at the asclepieia. These cures could have derived from patients’ self-healing mechanisms, but would have been perceived and conceptualized as “healing miracles” performed by the god. This preliminary study intends to show how cognitive approaches can enrich historical knowledge on the Asclepius cult and on supplicants’ healing experiences, suggesting that such approaches may contribute to a better understanding of “lived religion” and of multiple religious experiences in various religious contexts.

Mitigating and adapting to climate change are two critical civilizational challenges nowadays, and many social actors are facing them. The paper’s objective is to analyse the phenomenon of Polish climate justice social movements through the use of the ‘cognitive approach’, introduced and developed by Ron Eyerman and Andrew Jamison. The article addresses two main issues. First, it attempts to reconstruct a conceptual-methodological framework for research on environmental activism. Second, it presents a preliminary presentation of the cognitive universes and practices of Polish climate justice movements based on the findings from desk research and an empirical investigation based on 30 in-depth interviews conducted in three Polish cities (Poznań, Wrocław, Warszawa). The article also addresses research gaps while pointing out the need for greater involvement of the social sciences in climate change mitigation measures, including opening up academia to bottom-up perspectives.

Łagodzenie i adaptacja do zmian klimatu to dwa krytyczne wyzwania cywilizacyjne, wobec których staje wiele podmiotów społecznych. Celem artykułu jest analiza fenomenu polskich ruchów społecznych na rzecz sprawiedliwości klimatycznej za pomocą „podejścia poznawczego”, wprowadzonego i rozwijanego przez Rona Eyermana i Andrew Jamisona. Artykuł podejmuje dwa główne problemy. Po pierwsze, zawiera rekonstrukcję konceptualno-metodologicznych ram dla badań nad aktywizmem na rzecz sprawiedliwości klimatycznej. Po drugie, prezentuje wstępne rozpoznanie uniwersów poznawczych i praktyk polskich ruchów na rzecz sprawiedliwości klimatycznej, opierając się na desk research oraz badaniach opartych na 30 wywiadach pogłębionych przeprowa dzonych w trzech polskich miastach (Poznań, Wrocław, Warszawa). Artykuł wskazuje również na luki badawcze, identyfikując przede wszystkim potrzebę większego zaangażowania nauk społecznych w działania na rzecz łagodzenia zmian klimatu, w tym otwarcia środowiska akademickiego na perspektywy oddolne.

Das im alttestamentarischen Buch der Weisheit Salomos enthaltene Hohelied ist ein leidenschaftliches erotisches Liebesgedicht, das Prototyp der Liebeslyrik, das uralte, faszinierende, sinnliche Empfindungen und Wünsche von Mensch und ... Gott ausdrückt. Der Text hat zahlreiche Interpretationen in unterschiedlichen Strömungen erfahren, u.a. natürliche, kultisch-mythische, allegorische oder auch theologische Interpretation. Der Artikel verfolgt das Ziel, die einzigartige, multisensorische Veranschaulichung der Liebe zwischen Mann und Frau in körperlich-seelischer Dimension mit Hilfe der Metapher einer verkörperten Erfahrung von Sacrum und Profanum aufzuzeigen und zu beweisen, dass es keinen Dualismus dieser zwei Dimensionen gibt, sondern nur gegenseitige Beeinflussung. Die Verfasserin führt eine Analyse ausgewählter Metaphern und Metonymien des Textes in der Übersetzung von Czesław Miłosz unter Verwendung der kognitiven Methode von G. Lakoff und M. Johnson durch.

Song of Songs, included in the Old Testament Book of Wisdom is a passionate erotic poem, a prototype of love lyrical poetry which expresses perennial, fascinating, sensual sensations and human desires. The text has been the subject of numerous interpretations in various perspectives, among others: natural (pastoral), cult and mystical, allegorical or theological. It also stimulated quite provocative radical interpretations as it is a text one cannot go by indifferently. The aim of this paper is to analyze briefly a selected Sacrum/profanum metaphor via cognitive approach and indicate there is no dualism but rather mutual overlapping of those two spheres.

Pieśń nad Pieśniami zawarta w starotestamentowej księdze mądrościowej Salomona to namiętny erotyk, prototyp liryki miłosnej, który wyraża odwieczne, fascynujące, zmysłowe doznania i pragnienia człowieka i …Boga. Tekst doczekał się licznych interpretacji w różnych nurtach , m.in. interpretacja naturalna, kultowo-mityczna, alegoryczna, czy też teologiczna. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie unikatowego, wielosensorycznego obrazowania miłości pomiędzy mężczyzną a kobietą w wymiarze fizyczno-duchowym  za pomocą metafory ucieleśnionego doświadczenia Sacrum i profanum i wykazanie, że nie istnieje dualizm tych dwóch wymiarów, a jedynie wzajemne przenikanie. Autorka dokonuje analizy wybranych metafor i metonimii tekstu w przekładzie Czesława Miłosza z zastosowaniem metody kognitywnej G. Lakoffa i M. Johnsona.

The article concerns the issue of Slavonic aspect of Polish verb in the contrastive approach. The base for the contrastive analysis is Polish-German and German-Polish translation. Empirical research could finally be conducted in a complete and systematic way thanks to the new research perspective opened by applying cognitive semantics methods to the relevant issue. Here, the theories of Renata Grzegorczykowa and Volkmar Lehmann (concerning the primary or secondary cognitive character of each aspectual partner) are of particular importance. Conclusions drawn from the analysis focus on the following issues: the repertoire of functional exponents of aspect in German, the relevance of the category in Polish, the true importance of contextual and cognitive indicators of perfectiveness or imperfectiveness of verbs. The results are relevant from the perspective of translators and translation, but they can also be applied to the field of glottodidactics. They can provide a solid base for reopening the discussion on the ways of teaching aspect to students from non-Slavic countries and presenting the relevant issue in course books and other teaching materials.

Artykuł dotyczy zagadnienia słowiańskiego aspektu polskiego czasownika w ujęciu kontrastywnym. Podstawę analizy materiałowej stanowi przekład polsko-niemiecki i niemiecko-polski, a jej systematyczne i kompletne przeprowadzenie umożliwia nowa perspektywa badawcza, którą otwiera kognitywne ujęcie omawianego zagadnienia. Szczególne znaczenie mają tu konkluzje R. Grzegorczykowej i V. Lehmanna dotyczące kognitywnej prymarności lub sekundarności danego partnera w ramach opozycji aspektowej. Płynące z analizy materiału wnioski zogniskowane są wokół następujących problemów: repertuaru wykładników aspektu w języku bezaspektowym, relewancji omawianej kategorii w języku polskim, rzeczywistego udziału kontekstu w wyrażaniu znaczenia opozycji dokonaności : niedokonaności oraz znaczenia wykładnika kognitywnego dla rozpoznawania aspektu. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań mogą znaleźć zastosowanie nie tylko w praktyce translatorskiej, ale także w glottodydaktyce polonistycznej. Stanowią dobry punkt wyjścia do ponownego otwarcia dyskusji na temat sposobów nauczania aspektu w grupach niesłowiańskich oraz prezentacji omawianego zagadnienia w podręcznikach i innych materiałach dydaktycznych do języka polskiego jako obcego.
