The present paper arises from wider research (Válková, 2004, 2012) aimed at various manifestations of politeness theory, namely at the processes of apologising and complimenting and their results, i.e. overt language entities of different sizes and various structural configurations that can be perceived (or negotiated) as apologies and compliments. These are treated within the framework of a modified model of speech act set theory, with corpus‑based samples discussed to verify the validity of the theoretical findings. The results show that rather than single speech acts, apologies and compliments should be treated as speech act sets opening up space for identifying more delicate, partly universal and partly language specific scenarios, by means of which cross‑cultural similarities and differences can be considered. The consequences for SLA are also obvious: the lack of pragmatic competence in producing appropriate speech reactions diminishes the possibility of accomplishing the intended communicative goals.

Compliments and compliment responses are social actions that reflect norms of politeness and solidarity among speakers. These compliment/responses are negotiated among interactants who employ varying response strategies in different language/culture environments. A lack of knowledge about preferred strategies may cause cultural misunderstandings and feelings of disconnectedness. This article provides a concrete plan for implementing a lesson on compliment/responses in advanced beginning German language courses. The lesson plan is informed by conversation analytical research and pursues a teaching approach that nurtures interactional competence for enabling students to utilize culturally appropriate response strategies to actively engage with speakers of the target culture, creating positive feelings of appreciation and social harmony.

One of the most pressing concerns for many helpline staff is how to manage overt forms of distress and anxiety manifest in ‘troubles talk’, while also encouraging (or ‘empowering’) callers to take action to change the conditions that are creating the distress. Based on an audio-recording of a single call to a Home Birth helpline (drawn from a corpus of 80 such calls), we use conversation analysis to explore how the call-taker negotiates the tension between managing the caller’s distress about her scheduled hospital labour (the ‘presenting problem’), while also encouraging her to arrange a home birth (the ‘problem solution’). We focus on the work the call-taker does to position herself as troubles-talk recipient, while also ensuring that by the end of the encounter the caller has received the information and advice she needs to take action to organise her home birth.

The article analyses responses to the acts of partner’s positive evaluation (praises and compliments). However, I focus on the language of young people because I want to show changes in the courtesy of Poles. Contemporary cultural tendencies attack especially young people, who – under their influence – often revalue existing habits and patterns of their behavior. It seems that these changes are most visible in the young generation. Traditional Polish politeness can be combined with the attitude of modesty, i.e. with diminishing the speaker’s role. Nowadays, however, it can be observed that young people’s behavior is not compatible with this rule. It includes, among others, responses to compliments and praises, embodying the principle of agreeing with the speaker. It is a new linguistic behavior gaining more and more supportersnot only among young people.

W artykule analizuję repliki aktów dodatniego wartościowania partnera: pochwał i komplementów.
