I argue that Hume’s and Carnap’s criticism of philosophy (metaphysic) contains a rational core and that this core can be much more sharply formulated as soon as a procedural theory of concepts is applied. Also, a possible solution to the problem can be suggested in a much more definite manner.

Polish in the light of grammaticalization theoryThe paper is concerned with grammaticalization, a type of language change whereby lexical items, in specifi contexts, come to serve grammatical functions, and grammatical items acquire new grammatical functions. The aim is twofold: to shed light at the main properties of grammaticalization, and to demonstrate its applicability to Polish data. Some prominent examples in Polish are discussed: the grammaticalization of modals, imperative and avertive constructions. The paper closes with a non-exhaustive list of leads for further research into grammaticalization in Polish.

The study focuses on the research of concessivity in two centres; namely in the Petersburg typological school and in the Moscow school of semantics. It presents the methodology and the results of the analyses of main representatives of the schools. Both schools address concessivity from the perspective of the semantics of concessive operators. In Russian studies, the main attention is given to the conjunction хотя (‘although’) and its elaborations are based on two directions: a) from the perspective of the semantics of causes and effects; b) from the perspective of the semantics of condition. An interpretative basis of the causal relations is formed by the semantic components ‘because’ (‘потому что’), ‘therefore’ (‘поэтому’) and ‘it causes’ (‘влияет’). Interpretations of the aspect of condition corresponds to the semantic component ‘if…so’ (‘если…то’).

The article refers to the book Representations and Constructs of Childhood in the Literature and Culture of the 20th and 21st Centuries, edited by Alicja Dąbrowska, Robert Mielhorski and Beata Morzyńska-Wrzosek, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Kazimierza Wielkiego, Bydgoszcz 2022. This is a collective monograph devoted to the presentation of the image/figure of the child in fictional and intimate literature, literature for adults and for children, as well as in textbooks, theatre, photography, congratulatory cards, and painting. The way the child is portrayed in the art space is changing. Contemporary portrayals of the child fluctuate between representation and construction of his or her image, but the conviction of the creators and the awareness of the audience that any presentation is closer to creation than to “mimetic representation” seems to prevail. The authors present a wide range of approaches, which makes the book under review an interesting read.

The author defends the view that the notion of concept, if used in the logical (not cognitivist) tradition, should be explicated procedurally (i.e., not set-theoretically). He argues that Tichý’s Transparent Intensional Logic is an apt tool for such an explication and derives the respective definition. Some consequences of this definition concern the notions of emptiness, simple concepts, empirical concepts and algorithmic concepts.

This paper is devoted to the brilliant Czech logician and philosopher of language Pavel Tichý (1936–1994) who, after emigrating to New Zealand in 1970 and spending half his life there as a political refugee, committed suicide shortly before returning to his alma mater, Charles University in Prague, as Chair of the Department of Logic in the Faculty of Arts. After tracing a biographical profile of the Czech logician, the paper explains some of the central ideas of Tichý’s highly original theory, called Transparent Intensional Logic, while locating it in the wider context of the analytic philosophy of language. The paper concludes by highlighting the role played by Tichý’s intensional theory in advancing various disciplines, including artificial intelligence, with the aim of shedding light on the significant contributions of the Czech logician, who has yet to gain due recognition.

The article focusing on the latest research in antonymy (Jones et al. 2012) proposes to see this lexical- semantic relation in its broader sense (oppositeness) because this view meets the needs of lexicographers who aim at a more realistic description of a variety of semantic contrasts on the parole level. The text points out issues concerning lexical selection methods on the paradigmatic level with the help of the cooccurrence analysis. Examples of web search strings which help to elicit constructions containing antonym pairs are given. These ways show an urgent need to describe antonymy in constructions which emerge in authentic language usage, not on the systemic level (langue) only. The author emphasizes that exemplifying antonymy should be rethought in the domain of word-formation: formal regularities prevail on the system level only; however, the usage shows antonymy pairs with a wide range of possible contrasts.
