The article is a review and its goal is to present the most typical views on the cultural education of adults developed by the Polish researchers since 1989 as well as to outline its empirical picture. In the first part of the article the author describes ways of understanding cultural education within the framework of Polish classical (traditional) and non-traditional concept of cultural education. Then it is shown that with the spread of the broad way of understanding education as a lifelong process, adults appeared in the concepts of cultural education as its participants and addressees. However, none of the Polish concepts is focused on the adults only. In the second part of the article there are presented the characteristics and trends of cultural education of adults in Poland, reconstructed on the basis of studies conducted in recent years. In conclusion, the author emphasizes the need to develop research in this area, which after 1989 in Poland, was outside the mainstream of interest of researchers on adult education and requires in-depth test to identify and understand transformation taking place within it.

Artykuł ma charakter przeglądowy, jego celem jest przedstawienie najbardziej charakterystycznych koncepcji na temat edukacji kulturalnej dorosłych rozwijanych przez polskich przedstawicieli nauk o wychowaniu po roku 1989 oraz zarysowanie jej empirycznego obrazu w oparciu o dostępne wyniki badań. W pierwszej części artykułu autorka opisuje sposoby rozumienia edukacji kulturalnej w ramach polskich klasycznych (tradycyjnych) i nietradycyjnych koncepcji edukacji kulturalnej. Następnie pokazuje, że wraz z upowszechnieniem się szerokiego sposobu pojmowania edukacji jako procesu całożyciowego, dorośli pojawili się w koncepcjach edukacji kulturalnej jako jej uczestnicy i adresaci. Jednakże żadna z polskich koncepcji nie koncentruje się wyłącznie na samych ludziach dorosłych. W drugiej części artykułu zaprezentowane zostały cechy i tendencje edukacji kulturalnej dorosłych w Polsce, zrekonstruowane na podstawie przeprowadzonych w Polsce w ostatnich latach badań empirycznych. W konkluzji autorka podkreśla potrzebę rozwijania badań tego obszaru, który po roku 1989 w Polsce znalazł się poza głównym nurtem zainteresowania andragogów i wymaga pogłębionej eksploracji, pozwalającej zidentyfikować i zrozumieć dokonujące się w jego obrębie przeobrażenia.

The article is centred around the issue of the cultural activities undertaken by adult persons, and in this perspective it presents the objectives and major findings of the “Poczekalnia” (“Waiting room”) research project. The project was implemented in the “Bronowice” local community centre in Lublin, as part of the “Dom Kultury + Inicjatywy lokalne” (“Community Centre + Local Initiatives”) programme, and its central aim was to propose a range of activities for adults who are waiting for their children to finish their classes. Assuming that an adult person is well aware of his or her cultural needs and interests, the authors of the project decided to organise some focus meetings so as to become acquainted with adults’ cultural preferences and obtain information concerning their expectations about institutions. The research showed that the minds of young adults are wide open to cultural activities. They presented a total of 28 propositions in the focus meetings. Among the propositions there were various forms of education – in the fields of music and dance (a training course in ballroom dancing), the visual arts and the theatre (theatre workshops), photography and film (workshops in photography and motionpicture projection), literature (a reading room with periodicals, a club dedicated to interesting books, poetry-reading sessions), physical education (aerobics, zumba), counselling (lectures and discussions including issues in psychology and pedagogy), personal skills and competencies (a training course in speed reading, first aid training tips for cooking and herbal medicine), and also general knowledge (lectures dedicated to the history and culture of Lublin, and sightseeing).

Każda aktywność miłośnicza (w tym wiele działań hobbistycznych o znacznie mniejszym zasięgu i wymiarze, ale równie dużym znaczeniu kształcącym i wychowawczym) związana jest z nabywaniem określonych wiadomości i umiejętności w danej dziedzinie, wpływa pozytywnie na rozwój człowieka, wzbogaca jego osobowość i umacnia jego związek z kulturą. Przykładem płaszczyzny bezpośredniego kontaktu jednostki z daną dziedziną sztuki jest amatorski zespół artystyczny. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie motywów uczestnictwa osób dorosłych w amatorskim zespole chóralnym, opinii dotyczących korzyści wynoszonych z zajęć, zmian zaszłych w życiu chórzystów na skutek członkostwa w zespole, a także przedstawienie kształcących, poznawczych i wychowawczych wartości płynących z uczestnictwa w chórze oraz ustalenie, które z nich przeważają.

All activities undertaken during leisure time (including a number of hobby activities with a much smaller range and dimension, but equally great educational importance) are releted to obtaining certain knowledge and skills in a particular field, have a positive influance on a person’s evolution, enrich his or her personality, and strengthen their relationship with culture. An amateur artistic group is an example of a space of direct contact between a person and a particular field of art. The aim of the article is to show the motives for adults’ participation in an amateur choir, the opinions on the benefits they gain from this activity, the changes that occur in the life of choir members, as well as to show cognitive and educational values stemming from particiation in the choir and to determine which of them dominate.
