The cultural landscape reflects the composite influences of the regional physical, cultural, and technological environments. It is a dynamic entity which evolves over time and the perceptions of its human inhabitants is influential in the process. This paper is a descriptive analysis of Kangerlussuaq, a young but maturing settlement located in west Greenland near the inland ice. The site’s natural resource base did not attract permanent settlement by the Inuit or Scandinavian colonists, but in the early days of the World War II, the American military took advantage of the exceptional flying conditions here and established an air base. In time, civilian functions developed as Kangerlussuaq became the hub for air travel in Greenland. A transitory utilitarian settlement was eventually transformed into a more permanent settlement. In recent years there seems to be a growing sense of community and place attachment as the cultural landscape begins to exhibit more of the components of a real ‘town’.

In view of the growing interest in the nature of culture – language interface, on the one hand, and the socio-political developments inherent in European integration processes, on the other, three issues are perhaps worth addressing for linguists and cultural studies specialists: (i) whether the evolutionary processes of cultural integration can influence the structures of ethnic/national languages; (ii) the extent to which changes in language structure may result in a loss of certain elements characteristic of the culture related to the language; (iii) what that long-term (socio-political) consequences may be as an effect of the remarkable weakening and subsequent disappearance of the elements of ethnic cultures that function as determinants of ethnic/national identity. Considering the size of this article, none of the aforementioned issues will be solved. Nevertheless, some aspects of language–culture interface are identified, while the problem of ecological interdependence between language and culture is illustrated in the case of the death of Dyirbal. Changes in Dyirbal and examples of language expressions from English and Polish illustrating the cultural imprints in language structure are discussed from the perspective of cognitive methodologies.

The migration phenomenon always entails various consequences. There is a large sensitivity and understanding of this phenomenon within the interest and care of the Catholic Church. The current external and internal tendencies creating circumstances leading to isolation of migrants and marginalizing their presence, should be, in accordance with the teaching of the Church, overcome so that everyone, especially the young immigrants, could come to terms with his new environment, new country and culture, so that he will be able to realize his life plans and devote his time to those who constitute his new social network within the Christian community. The Catholic Church in Sweden, among its many initiatives and suggestions, tries, with different effects, to create a suitable climate for young immigrants’ integration anticipating it being the right way of building a Catholic community in a society indoctrinated by environments hostile to culture, history and catholic tradition and of the Catholic Church. The following article is an attempt to present the initiatives of the Catholic Church in Sweden in their efforts to achieve cultural integration of young immigrants with the help of Sveriges Unga Katoliker (Swedish Young Catholics) organization within its own activities and by way of cooperation with parishes and national missions

The aim of the paper is to present selected aspects of integration (in the cultural sense) of the Arabic community in Poland in the context of Poland’s integration (migration) policy which Poland formally does not have at present. What Arabic and Polish respondents have to say about the integration process may be useful for the more efficient management of the immigration phenomenon.

Formal education can be a mechanism for increasing social tolerance, political transparency and cultural integration; thus, a discussion of the relationship between political and social instability and resultant struggle with comprehensive educational reform in Kurdistan is timely. This chapter, written by the two university presidents of the only American-style not-for-profit institutions in Kurdistan/Iraq, narrates the challenges the authors face in bringing high-quality education to a region of the world confronting civil unrest, continual violence and economic turmoil.

An important factor in building the academic community is the atmosphere (corporate culture) which is the resultant of the process of merging, creating whole from the part or effects of that process as well as the goal-oriented actions focused on maintaining the whole (which requires exceptional enhancing or protecting conditions). It is a complex of inter-dependent changes leading to connect the components in a given sphere, domain or aspect of social life. The fact of its continuity it is not without meaning for the existence of academic community which is weaved by relations with great authorities. The fi ght for social capital which allows the control of mechanisms creating the domain is a fi ght for scientifi c authority. The scientifi c community which is shown with no criticism and is being idealized in the description of the sphere of science disappears if that domain becomes the area of strife. The academic community, as any other social group, might be more organized in one aspect and less in another or it can even be disorganized. Full integration takes place when the degrees of integration in given spheres: cultural, normative, communicational, functional in given so- 27 J. Any social changes and transformations taking place in Poland and the attempts to reform the higher education overlap each other and contribute to the democratic defi cit of transformation masked by ritualization of appearances of development.

Europe has failed to fully integrate its immigrants, and difficulties in this domain influence public opinion regarding newcomers and immigration policies today. Drawing on the concepts of Swedish political scientist Tomas Hammar, who proposed four “gates” to (political) integration, countries should define “gates” for the political, economic and cultural integration of their immigrants. As experiences of the last decades have shown, political integration is necessary, but not sufficient. The economic sphere has been accepted as key, but the cultural sphere has yet to receive the attention of scholars and policymakers it requires. Policies directed at receiving societies are also necessary to facilitate integration.
