The article discusses few Manfred Spitzer’s theses expressed in his book “Digital dmentia” in which the author argues that the overuse of a digital technology brings about the breakdown of cognitive abilities. Firstly, a brief presentation of the grounds for the success of Spitzer’s work and his main ideas is given. Secondly, article shows that Spitzer made a mistake of technological reductionism and trusts too much in a commonsense thinking. However, the main mistake of Spitzer’s work is the omission of structural conditions that is the key to a social analysis. In other words, Spitzer do not perceive class inequalities in the access and the use of digital media.

Artykuł jest polemiką z niektórymi tezami Manfreda Spitzera postawionymi w książce „Cyfrowa demencja. W jaki sposób pozbawiamy rozumu siebie i swoje dzieci”, w której niemiecki psychiatra dowodzi, że korzystanie z mediów cyfrowych powoduje zmniejszenie potencjału umysłowego. Po krótkim przedstawieniu powodów sukcesu pracy Spitzera i jego głównych poglądów, artykuł skupia się m.in. na ukazaniu, że dokonuje on redukcjonizmu technologicznego, a także zawierza zdroworozsądkowym przekonaniom. Zasadniczym punktem krytyki jest jednak zwrócenie uwagi na pominięcie przez Spitzera – kluczowych dla analiz społecznych – warunków strukturalnych. Autor „Demencji…” nie dostrzega bowiem nierówności klasowych w dostępie, ale przede wszystkim w sposobie korzystania z mediów cyfrowych.

The purpose of this article is to determine the influence of the internet on human memory. The author tries to answer the question of how the extensive use of the Internet can determine the process of remembering. The author treats the dominant medium of the digital age as an external database, which frees us from the process of remembering, because we rely on an external resource, which can be reached at any time. At the same time it is pointed out that the perception of the process of lowering the efficiency and effectiveness of our mind, is not a precedent, because in the past these concerns were articulated about each new medium

Celem artykułu jest określenie wpływu Internetu na procesy pamięciowe. Autorka stara się udzielić odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak intensywne korzystanie z Internetu może determinować proces zapamiętywania. Dominujące medium epoki cyfrowej traktuje autorka jak zewnętrzny bank danych, który zwalnia nas z procesu zapamiętywania, gdyż polegamy na zewnętrznym zasobie, do którego w dowolnej chwili można sięgnąć. Jednocześnie zwraca uwagę, iż dostrzeganie procesu obniżania się sprawności i efektywności naszego umysłu nie ma charakteru precedensowego, gdyż w przeszłości tego typu obawy były artykułowane wobec każdego nowego medium.
