The continuosly transforming contemporary world has altered the process of identity creation. Consequently, the contemporaneous discouse on identity is subject to fundamental metamorphoses. The power of consumption, in its broadest sense, represents one of the major factors that affects the way people conceive an perceive their and others' indentities. Ultimately, the social relations are also functioning differently. The basic purpose of this paper is to understand whether people are losing their identities or whether they are creating new ones. It is an attempt to identtify the positive and/or negative aspects of consumption in the process of identity creation. The paradoxical connection between the contemporaneous discourse on identity and the process of consumption is expressed in Baudrillard's concept of consumption as a system of signs. Baudrillard considers consumers to be “mutually implicated, in a general system of exchange and in the production of coded values.”

W ostatnich latach w wielu sferach polskiego dyskursu publicznego sposób mówienia o pamięci radykalnie się zmienił. Z artykułów prasowych minionego 10-lecia oraz szeregu monografii poświęconych pamięci zbiorowej wyekscerpowano 300 kolokacji z komponentem pamięć, odnotowując m.in., że wyraz pamięć regularnie przybiera postać liczby mnogiej i zdecydowanie zwiększył zakres swojej łączliwości o wyrazy, z którymi nigdy wcześniej w polszczyźnie się nie łączył. Zmiana sposobu mówienia wywołana jest zmianą sposobu myślenia o pamięci i sposobu jej postrzegania. Pozostając niezmiennie wartością, w polskim językowym obrazie świata pamięć jest już nie tylko dyspozycją umysłu, pojemnikiem i przenośnikiem obrazów i wrażeń, ale także materią służącą tworzeniu i podlegającą przetwarzaniu, obiektem świadomych działań i zabiegów. Zmiana ta, związana bezpośrednio z debatą toczoną wokół polskiej pamięci i niepamięci zbiorowej oraz reguł prowadzenia polityki historycznej, jest istotnym czynnikiem kształtowania polskiego dyskursu tożsamościowego.

In recent years, the way of speaking about memory in many spheres of Polish discourse has changed dramatically. Three hundred collocations with the word pamięć ‘memory’ have been excerpted from press articles of the last decade and several monographs on collective memory. It has been noticed that the word is regularly pluralized now and has extended its collocability onto new lexical areas. These changes result from those in how memory is thought about and perceived. While still a value, in the Polish linguistic worldview memory is no longer a mere disposition of the mind, a receptacle for and carrier of images and sensations, but also a matter which both effects and is subject to changes, an object of conscious acts. The change, directly connected with the debate concerning Polish collective memory and non-memory, as well as the rules of historical policy, is an important factor which shapes the discourse of Polish identity.
