Today people seem to have endless consumption needs while the world we live in is finite with limited resources. This easily leads to an ecological crisis. Arne Naess and different representatives of the current „deep ecology" ask and explain „ecological wisdom "in an attempt to find a solution for this crisis. This situation considers the basic dispute between the choice of human lifestyles, such as affirming the value of personal wealth, against the best interest of nature and natural resources. It is asked: What are the implications between the growth of consumption and the exploitation of nature? The present article takes up the difficult task of presenting basic ideas of deep ecology in the context of other ecological theories and praxis. It characterizes the dispute between deep ecology and different proposals of preservation of nature and the resolution of the global ecological crisis. Furthermore, it represents a critical analysis of the philosophical basis of deep ecology and points to the Christian/Franciscan attitudes of brotherhood towards our „smaller brothers" - the plants and animals.

W niniejszym artykule zaprezentowane zostały przekonania i poglądy fińskiego przedstawiciela ekologii głębokiej, Pentti Linkoli. Postać tę należy uznać za jedną z najbardziej charyzmatycznych i radykalnych na gruncie debat i dyskusji, w ramach których poszukuje się sposobów walki z globalnym kryzysem ekologicznym. Linkola szans na uratowanie życia w biosferze dostrzega w zorganizowanym przymusie, zdecydowanej redukcji liczby populacji ludzkiej, zarządzanym przez silny centralny ośrodek władzy systemie autorytarnym, w skrajnym ograniczaniu społeczeństw w zakresie konsumpcji, posiadania, podróżowania czy korzystania z energii elektrycznej. Koncepcja Linkoli przesiąknięta jest negatywnymi sądami na temat odpowiedzialności i mądrości gatunku ludzkiego – stanowi ujęcie ekocentryczne, w którym przedkłada się dobro i wartość życia w ogóle nad dobro i wartość życia poszczególnych jednostek. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie i próba oceny jego poglądów na kwestie relacji człowiek versus przyroda w odniesieniu do koncepcji bardziej znanych w Polsce autorów. Warto bowiem zaznaczyć, że idee oraz postulaty głoszone przez Linkolę nie są obecne na gruncie rodzimego dorobku subdyscyplin nauk społecznych, których przedstawiciele koncentrują swoją uwagę na społeczno-politycznych źródłach i skutkach problemów ekologicznych we współczesnym świecie. Fakt ten decyduje o istocie oraz wartości zamierzeń badawczych sformułowanych na potrzeby prezentowanego w artykule wywodu.

In this article were presented beliefs and ideas of Pentti Linkola who was a Finnish representative of deep ecology. Taking into consideration debates and discussions on how to solve global environmental crisis, he must be perceived as one of the most charismatic and radical figure. The only solutions to protect life in biosphere are for him: organized coercion, compulsory reduction of the human population, authoritarian system managed by a strong centralized government, forcing people to reduce consumption, possessions, travelling, and usage of electricity. The concept of Linkola’s philosophy is full of negative judgments towards humans’ responsibility and wisdom. His ideas are also eco-centered and prioritize weal and value of life in general over the weal and life of a single person. The aim of this article is to present and compare Finnish thinker’s opinions on relations between people and environment with other – more popular in Poland – authors. It is worth to mention that Linkola’s ideas and demands are not mentioned in the works of domestic representatives of subdisciplines in social science which concentrate on social and political sources and effects of ecological problems in the modern world. This fact will determine the essence and value of assumptions made for the presented in the article disquisition.
