Two Faces of Flow: Preliminary Results From a Game Addiction Study

This study aims to explore the ambiguous nature of flow and the way it relates to inclination towards addiction. The results of an exploratory factor analysis indicate that the flow experienced by players has at least two components which are called in this study hedonistic flow (direct pleasure seeking) and eudaimonistic flow (escapism). The results of the regression analysis show that 54.4% of the variance of Internet addiction is accounted for by life competence, eudaimonistic flow in a game, excitement as an emotion experienced while playing a game and annoyance as an emotion experienced when it is not possible to play.

Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu zbadanie dwuznacznej natury przepływu oraz sposobu, w jaki ten związany jest ze skłonnością do uzależnienia. Rezultaty wstępnej analizy czynnikowej wskazują, że przepływ doświadczany przez graczy ma przynajmniej dwa komponenty, nazwane w niniejszym badaniu przepływem hedonistycznym (bezpośrednie poszukiwanie przyjemności) i eudajmonistycznym (eskapizm). Wyniki analizy regresji pokazują, że 54,4% wariancji uzależnienia od internetu wyjaśniane jest przez kompetencje życiowe, eudajmonistyczny przepływ w grze, podekscytowanie jako emocję doświadczaną podczas gry oraz irytację jako emocję doświadczaną, gdy nie istnieje możliwość grania.

The subject of the considerations is the free-time educational activity of the protagonists of Sergey Kuznetsov’s novel, which can be considered as an example of both scientific and developmental tutoring. The writer, using the genre of the family saga, through the fate of Vladimir, Valery and Andrei, shows one hundred years from the history of Russia in the context of the influence of politics on an individual’s life. Fear of power, rebellion against it, or, finally, disappointment with the current social situation become an incentive for the characters to seek alternative forms of fulfillment. Tutoring is therefore a form of escapism from reality, and its implementation reflects the spirit of the times in which the Dymovs live.

„Outside of Society”: Socio-political Aspects of Psychedelic/Narcotic Consumption in Selected Euroamerican Literatures

Psychedelically/narcotically-inspired literature originally concentrated on the authors’ experiences (vide De Quincey), in line with the idea of Romantic individualism. Promoting the attitudes considered anti-social or immoral, it was unacceptable for the protectors of any socio-political status quo, and thus found itself „in exile” from the middle-class society. With fin-de-siecle or surrealist writers (vide Rimbaud), it became more directly rebellious: evolving later from the Beats’ isolationism and „passive resistance” towards a socio-political utopia that, in the Psychedelic Revolution era, was intended as an alternative to the cul-de-sac of late capitalism. i. e. as a mainstream socio-cultural project. In this essay, we shall attempt to trace the development of the socio-political traits in drug-inspired literature, with special stress upon A. Huxley, a tentative believer in the aforementioned utopia, and W. S. Burroughs, its „dystopian” deconstructor.

Literatura o genezie psychoedelicznej czy narkotykowej pierwotnie eksponowała osobiste doświadczenia autorów (patrz De Quincey), zgodnie z ideą romantycznego indywidualizmu. Propagując postawy aspołeczne czy wręcz amoralne z perspektywy obrońców socjo-politycznego status quo, znalazła się “poza” społeczeństwem” (kapitalistycznym i mieszczańskim). Dzięki Rimbaudowi i francuskim surrealistom stała się bardziej buntownicza - później zaś, w USA, ewoluowała od artystowskiego izolacjonizmu i “biernego oporu” beatników do socjopolitycznej utopii, która w czasach rewolucji hipisowskiej zyskała szerszy wymiar socjokulturowy jako antidotum na miazmaty późnego kapitalizmu. Niniejszym przedstawiamy zarys ewolucji wątków socjopolitycznych w literaturze “psychodeliczno- narkotykowej”, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem A. Huxleya, jednego z inicjatorów owej utopii, oraz W. S. Burroughsa, jej świadomego dekonstruktora.

The article is an attempt to settle a matter of what art demands from the artist and whether the artist has a right to sacrifice others for the sake of their work. It discusses the escapist attitude to life of the artists who are characters of Ian McEwan’s three novels. Amsterdam, On Chesil Beach and, to a lesser extent, Atonement present this particular art-artist relation. The article also demonstrates McEwan’s accomplished use of auditory images as well as musicology terms as character and atmosphere-building elements which make the narration harmonise with the narrative.

Artykuł jest próbą ustalenia, czego sztuka wymaga od artysty oraz czy artysta ma prawo poświęcić innych dla dobra swojego dzieła. Autorka rozważa w nim eskapistyczny stosunek do życia artystów – bohaterów trzech powieści Iana McEwana. Amsterdam, Na Plaży Chesil oraz, w mniejszym stopniu, Pokuta prezentują tę szczególną relację sztuka – artysta. W artykule ukazano także mistrzowskie posługiwanie się McEwana obrazami dźwiękowymi, jak również terminologią z zakresu muzykologii, jako elementami budującymi postaci i tworzącymi atmosferę, co sprawia, że narracja harmonizuje z fabułą powieści.

The article raises issues related to the concept neo-tribes developed by a French sociologist Michel Maffesoli, which is treated as opposition to the concept of individualism currently popular in the scientific discourse. The author polemicizes with the idea of a liquid life by arguing that the key need in human life is to belong to some community. The reflections on the nature of neo-tribes are referred to Himalayan mountaineering, treated as a form of escapism from tribal communities, and at the same time as a tool for self-discovery.

Artykuł podejmuje kwestie związane z koncepcją neoplemion francuskiego socjologa Michela Maffesoliego, którą traktuje jako opozycyjną wobec popularnej obecnie w dyskursie naukowym koncepcji indywidualizmu. Autorka polemizuje z teorią płynnego życia, przekonując, iż najważniejszą potrzebą w życiu człowieka jest przynależność do jakieś wspólnoty. Rozważania dotyczące istoty neoplemion odnosi do himalaizmu, traktując go jako formę eskapizmu od wspólnot plemiennych, a jednocześnie jako narzędzie samopoznania.

War and Peace in the Rhetoric of the Psychedelic Revolution in the United States and the United Kingdom

First, the idea of “warfare” as inherent in the initiation aspect of the psychedelic experience is discussed; then this experience is highlighted as the nucleus of the so called new consciousness, understood by T. Leary as the “revolution of the mind.” Other ideologists of the Hippie generation, though, interpreted it in terms of socio-political “warfare” (J. Sinclair), i. e. in contradiction to “love and peace”: most immediately associated with the Hippies, and here interpreted to some extent along the lines of Baudelaireian “artificial paradise.” The resulting paradoxes, as well as various meanings of “warfare” or “conflict,” are subsequently exemplified on the basis of relevant rock lyrics of the era (e.g. The Beatles, Tomorrow, Jefferson Airplane, MC5), when “artistic articulation” basically meant the musical one. Finally, the paradoxical nature of LSD as the weapon of the Hippie Revolution is elucidated through the analysis of Country Joe & the Fish’s second album.

Na początku omówiono koncepcję “walki” w kontekscie inicjacyjnego aspektu doświadczenia psychodelicznego: centralnego dla “nowej świadomości”, według T. Leary’ego oznaczającej “rewolucję na pozomie mentalnym”. Inni ideologowie pokolenia hipsowskiego interpretowali jednak “nową świadomość” w dosłownym sensie socjo-politycznej “walki” (J. Sinclair), czyli w sprzeczności z filozofią “miłości pokoju”, naturalnie kojarzoną ze światopoglądem hipisowskim, bliską też jednak “sztucznym rajom” w rozumieniu Baudelaire’a. Wynikające stąd paradoksy, jak również różne znaczenia pojęć “walki” i “konfliktu” zilustrowano następnie przykładami z klasycznych piosenek rockowych okresu rewolucji hipsowskiej (m. in. The Beatles, Tomorrow, Jefferson Airplane, MC5), wyrażającej się głównie przez muzykę. Na koniec podjęto próbę wyjaśnienia paradoksalnego charakteru LSD jako głównego oręża tejże rewolucji na przykładzie drugiego albumu grupy Country Joe & the Fish.

This paper attempts to provide an overview of new motifs, protagonists and concepts in literary works conceived as aesthetic representations of various models of social withdrawal and isolation. To illuminate the social context, sustainable lifestyles and trends that emerged at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries (homing, cocooning, hikikomori syndrome) were used and interpreted as counter-designs to the social changes brought about by globalisation and digitalisation.

W artykule podjęto próbę dokonania przeglądu nowych motywów, bohaterów i koncepcji w utworach literackich pomyślanych jako estetyczne reprezentacje różnych modeli społecznego wycofania się i izolacji. Celem naświetlenia kontekstu społecznego zostały przedstawione style życia i trendy, które pojawiły się na przełomie XX i XXI wieku (homing, cocooning, syndrom hikikomori) i interpretowane są jako kontrprojekty wobec zmian społecznych wywołanych przez globalizację i cyfryzację.

Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht einen Überblick über neue Motive, Protagonisten und Konzepte literarischer Werke zu geben, die als ästhetische Repräsentationen verschiedener Modelle des sozialen Rückzugs und der Isolation konzipiert sind. Zur Beleuchtung des gesellschaftlichen Kontextes wurden nachhaltige Lebensstile und Trends herangezogen, die um die Wende des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts entstanden sind (homing, cocooning, Hikikomori-Syndrom) und als Gegenentwürfe zu den durch Globalisierung und Digitalisierung hervorgerufenen gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen gedeutet werden.
