The article aims to analyze the leadership of Marek Jurek - the founder and the chairman of the Prawica Rzeczypospolitej (Republic's Right Wing). The author characterizes Jurek's journey to party leadership, his political convictions, the social-demographic charac-teristics of the leader, the type of leadership he employs, his status in the party structures, and his means of reaching his goals. M. Jurek is also a leader of a party now outside the parliament, the party that strictly refers to the teaching of the Catholic Church. Jurek defines the party as Christian-conservative. Emphasizing such issues as absolute prohibition of abortion, M. Jurek is also against: the legalization of same-sex partnerships, in vitro fertilization, and Poland's accession into the Euro Zone. He can be classified as a intellectually astute leader.

The main aim of this paper is to scrutinize William Kingdon Clifford’s ethical evidentialism and to defend it against the criticism formulated by pragmatist thinkers. Clifford famous thesis states: “It is wrong, always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.” Clifford’s argumentation for this thesis, which fits into 19th century positivist epistemology, consciously included pragmatist elements which defy the classical pragmatist criticism of its supposed radicality. Additionally, it seems that contemporary pragmatists accounts support normative intuitions that backed up Clifford’s account of ethics of belief, proposed almost 150 years ago. The latter includes a normative-ethical argument for the grounds of epistemology.

Celem artykułu jest analiza etycznej wersji ewidencjalizmu XIX-wiecznego matematyka i filozofa W.K. Clifforda i obrona go przed zarzutami formułowanymi przez pragmatystów. Znana teza Clifforda brzmi: „Zawsze, wszędzie i bez względu na osobę niesłusznie jest żywić przekonania oparte na niedostatecznym świadectwie”. Argumentacja Clifforda na rzecz tej tezy, wpisująca się zasadniczo w XIX-wieczny program pozytywistycznej epistemologii, świadomie uwzględniała elementy pragmatyczne, wykluczające jej przesadnie radykalne odczytanie i krytykę. Okazuje się też, że współczesne koncepcje pragmatyczne właściwie wspierają normatywne intuicje, kryjące się za programem „etyki przekonań”, zaproponowanym przez Clifforda prawie 150 lat temu. Te ostatnie obejmują twierdzenie o normatywnych-etycznych podstawach epistemologii.

Socjologia w literaturze. Casus Wojny końca świata Mario Vargasa Llosy

The purpose of this essay is to propose a view of the world described in the novel as a sociological object. The literary work subject to analysis is Mario Vargas Llosa’s “The War of the End of the World”, with Lewis A. Coser’s remarks referred to as guidelines on how a sociologist may do his or her research on a reality presented in a novel. The author wants to point out that it may be useful to recur to elements of the sociological theories in order better to understand the social phenomena and processes portrayed in literature. Such procedure may enrich the interpretation of the novel, at the same time being not without interest for science.

Celem szkicu jest propozycja spojrzenia na świat przedstawiony w powieści jako przedmiot refleksji socjologicznej. Dziełem literackim, które zostało poddane analizie, jest Wojna końca świata Mario Vargasa Llosy, a główną wskazówką wytyczającą sposób, w jaki socjolog może badać rzeczywistość powieściową, są spostrzeżenia Lewisa A. Cosera. Chcemy zwrócić uwagę, że sięgnięcie po elementy teorii socjologicznych może okazać się przydatne w pełniejszym rozumieniu ukazanych w fabularnym świecie zjawisk i procesów społecznych. Z jednej strony wzbogaca to interpretację, z drugiej – urozmaica zasób przypadków interesujących dla nauki.
