The text has been based on the quality research which was carried out in 2007 and 2008 in the Opole region migrants’ environment (60 interviews and 30 letters – diaries). The diaries were describing emotions, feelings and thoughts of women working abroad. Women were going abroad to improve living conditions of their families. The outcome of multifaceted quantity research contains the descriptions of women’s emotional states. The research is based on two groups of women: migrating: 357 females, and non-migrating: 164 females. Female migrants were aware of difficulties connected with their working abroad (parting with the family and hard, sometimes monotonous, work). However, they could become independent financially and active professionally. The state of being employed could change their social position, their way of thinking and their social roles. For some women mobility was a specific maternal strategy and the way to fulfill their roles in a family.

The present paper examines how, at a time of post EU-enlargement migration, female Polish migrants in the UK act within, despite and against the social structure of gender regimes in the origin and host societies and how female migrant agents are actively mediating structures in a quest to fulfil their aspirations. Biographical narrative interviews conducted with female Polish migrant workers in the UK and semi-structured expert interviews provide the empirical data for the analysis of how employment trajectories in migration can challenge or reinforce gender roles, and of the role of female migrants’ agency. The paper shows how some women are limited in their opportunities by gender roles and familial obligations, while others are able to progress professionally either by entering a typical ‘migrant’ sector, by undertaking UK education, or by starting their own businesses, challenging the gendered expectations they face. The paper thus contributes to the discussion on female migrants as disadvantaged migrant workers or as active agents of change.

The main goal of this paper is to deepen the understanding of female labour migration in the Czech Republic through proposing a blueprint of a research design that can be implemented in a form of a research project. A special stress in the research design is made on the research of the female labour and on examining how far the notion of risk may be useful as an analytical tool in explaining the process of female labour migration using the example of the work sectors typically allocated for female workers (e.g. cleaning, nursing, retail sellers, etc.). Furthermore, blueprint offers a novel approach to the topic of female migration by enriching the new methodological toolbox by applying the methodology of Mexican Migration Project (MMP) carried our since 1982 by Professor Douglas Massey from Princeton University and Professor Jorge Durand from the University of Guadalajara. This approach would yield a unique source of data that would enable tracking patterns and processes of contemporary female labour immigration to the Czech Republic.

W artykule przedstawiono problemy migracji zarobkowej kobiet.

The article addresses problems of women’s labour migration. They are connected with the transformation of modern families, in particular with the restriction of their caring potential in rich countries as a result of professional work of women and decreased fertility, while at the same time the population in these countries is aging. The care deficit which emerged there attracts women from poorer countries who face difficulties in finding jobs in their countries of origin. The article also discusses individual aspects of women’s migration including their emotional burden relating to leaving the country, separation from their children and family as well as difficult working and living conditions. The adverse effects of migration of mothers on the children left behind in their countries, particularly on their mental health and development as well as the stability of the family, are also discussed.

Post-accession Female Mobility between Poland and Norway. New Trends and New Ways of Thinking about MigrationThis paper presents recent research on Polish female migration to Norway. We focus our discussion of existing literature on this subject on issues of gendered migration trajectories, children and adult education, career paths of migrant women, and the effects of migration on families and communities in Norway and Poland. There are many thematic and methodological gaps in recent scholarship on migration of Polish women to Norway despite an increased number of research projects and publications. Most scholars center on social attitudes towards migration, and consequently decisions on migration made by women and their families. Poakcesyjna mobilność kobiet pomiędzy Polską a Norwegią. Nowe kierunki myślenia o migracjiW tekście przedstawiamy trendy w badaniach migracji Polek do Norwegii we współczesnej literaturze. Mimo wzrostu liczby projektów badawczych i publikacji naukowych dotyczących ostatnich migracji Polaków do Norwegii wiele aspektów życia Polek-migrantek nie zostało dotąd przeanalizowanych.
