Chris Eyre is a native American independent filmmaker. Some of his films are based on the books by Sherman Alexie and Tony Hillerman. At the same time, Eyre adapts American mainstream film genres (road movies, sport movies) in order to revise cinematic representations of the native Americans. The author of this article analyses such films as Smoke Signals, The Edge of America, Skinwalkers and We Shall Remain, trying to define the role and meaning of different adaptation strategies in Eyre’s works. In Smoke Signals and The Edge of America the director pictures and discusses the most important issues of modern Indian identity. In this context his films seem to prove that the dominant cinematic representations of native Americans are changing.

Pilawska Roksana, Duma i uprzedzenie jak historia romantyczna. O adaptacji powieści Jane Austen w reżyserii Joe Wrighta [Dirty (un)Romantic story. An Analysis of Aesthetic Aspects in the Film Adaptation of Pride and Prejudice Directed by Joe Wright]. „Przestrzenie Teorii” 32. Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 417–431. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.23. The aim of my study is to attempt a comparative analysis of the two most famous film adaptations of the bestselling novel by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice. As research material, I chose the mini-series produced by the BBC in 1995, which was part of the then popular trend of heritage films (heritage cinema) and the feature film from 2005, directed by Joe Wright, which, in the opinion of film experts, was a completely new form of audiovisual presentation of Austen’s work. In the article, I focus only on interpreting the aesthetic aspects of both productions, which would indicate similarities and differences, thus showing numerous shifts of emphasis in the aesthetic layer of the newer version.

Lovecraft’s posthumous eruption of fame brought about a series of transformative processes in the writer’s once wholesome vision. Such a development essentially led to the fragmentation of the initial assortment of ideas provided by the creator of the mythos, but it also spawned a handful of original interpretations of the classic material. This paper examines the specific nature of Lovecraftian horror (as well as literary horror in general) and the difficulty of its cross-media implementation. The analysis focuses mainly on cinematographic attempts, dissecting some of the more peculiar film adaptations of the Cthulhu mythos and examining their faithfulness to the source material, fear-inducing potential, and prominent posthuman aspects. The essay concludes by utilizing the above information to determine the contemporary state of weird fiction and pondering upon the future prospects of the genre.

b2_In its time it also presented a challenge to literary studies and history, whose interpretations had themselves confirmed these concretizations, and it anticipated by many years literary historical research into the Biedermeier idyll, which highlighted the text elements stressing the contradictions which Němcová endeavoured to supress, smooth over, patch up or reconcile within her work.

The article discusses a classic horror story from 1839. It presents those elements of the novel typical of Romanticism, as well as the ones with which Tolstoy exceeded his era. The Polish translation of the piece, published for the first time in 1975, as well as four film adaptations of Tolstoy’s story were analyzed, trying to show how film directors interpreted its universal and timeless themes.
