Geocaching is a type of a field game, which consists in finding caches (Eng. cache) placed earlier in the area. Participants of the game find the approximate location of a hidden “treasure, basing on geographic coordinates and descriptions contained on the website and using GPS.Perceptiveness, creativity and unconventional thinking should be demonstrated to find a cache. There is a so-called logbook in a hidden container in which its finding should be recorded, and then this fact must be confirmed on a special website (http://www.geocaching.com, http://www.geocaching.pl). Geocaching is not a threat to the environment, the rules of the game forbid the devastation of the environment near the cache. Many of the caches are located in the areas of national parks. Enthusiasts of a new form of tourism, which is geocaching, are rarely encountered near Roztoczański National Park, even though the area has a great potential for using in this game (play). Currently, there is only one cache in the Park at the Conservative Breeding Centre in Florianka. Numerous natural and cultural values, as well as developed tourism infrastructure create favorable conditions for the creation (establishment) of new caches in the RNP (Roztoczański National Park) and its surroundings. The authors present a proposal for the inclusion of new caches along the bicycle route Zwierzyniec – Florianka – Górecko Stare. General use of this kind of activity can be helpful in tourist traffic dispersal and directing tourists to places rarely visited.

This article is an attempt to show that by playing a field game, students can be encouraged to learn and become interested in many aspects of the natural sciences. It has been shown that modern teaching techniques, using GPS receivers, can be a valuable tool for Geography teachers. The Geocaching game (available as a free smartphone application) was chosen as a good example of one such teaching technique, on the basis of which a didactic path was created in the “Żabi Kraj” area, which is an attractive nature area in the Cieszyn district in southern Poland. For the purposes of this article, a survey was conducted among students who participated in classes using the didactic path. Over 200 students of a range of ages took part in the survey, from the sixth class of Primary school to the 2nd and 3rd grades of High School classes. As many as 96% of them were satisfied with the outdoor activities during which they learned using the Geocaching field game.

Based on an analysis of the names of approximately 1500 Czech geocaches, the article outlines the basic naming processes involved in choosing cache names. Since most geo-caches are located in the open countryside, it is not surprising that transonymic processes involving transformation of toponyms and other kinds of place names are very frequent. However, due to the diverse character of geocaches, the motivation may also derive from existing anthroponyms or any other names of man-made, natural or fictional objects. Cache--naming may likewise involve the specification of the founder’s identity, the method of sol-ving a mystery task, the cache function, a mention of the treasure-hunting nature of the game and the serial character of some caches, with names often chosen with an element of humour. It is argued that the special nature of caches as onymic objects allows their names to be conceived of as a special category, namely cacheonyms. The article also discusses several aspects of the formal make-up of cache names and outlines some basic socio-linguistic issues connected with code choice (local code /e.g. Czech/ v. English v. other codes, and their mutual combinations).
