This article aims to compare two translations of George Gordon Byron’s poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, which were published only a year apart during the Young Poland period: Jan Kasprowicz’s Wędrówki Rycerza Harolda (1895) and Aleksander Krajewski’s Wędrówki Childe Harolda (1896). A comparative analysis using the methodological background of translation studies shows the equal value of the two translations, one of which is still the basic version of Byron’s work in Polish while the other has been almost entirely forgotten.

Inspired by the questionnaire answered while working on the international research project “Histoire de la traduction littéraire en Europe médiane” (Inalco, France, 2009–2018), the author discusses the reasons behind and the characteristics of pseudotranslations published in Poland after 1945 and of the “urgent” translations done in Poland  between 1945 and 1989.

Tekst stanowi recenzję publikacji Karoliny Dębskiej „Polskie tłumaczki literackie XIX wieku” (2023), która jako pierwsza na rynku wydawniczym tak dogłębnie poruszyła kwestię funkcjonowania tłumaczek w przestrzeni publicznej. Autorka koncentruje się na ukazaniu habitusu XIX-wiecznych translatorek uwikłanych w społeczne normy, zakazy, tendencje wyniesione z domu rodzinnego i ukazuje je jako czynniki wpływające na ich decyzje translatorskie. Dzięki wnikliwej analizie zwieńczonej dwoma leksykonami polskich tłumaczek pierwszej i drugiej połowy XIX wieku Dębska wydobywa z cienia postaci dotąd pomijane na kartach historii bądź całkowicie zapomniane.

The text is a review of Karolina Dębska’s publication “Polskie tłumaczki literackie XIX wieku” (“Polish Female Literary Translators of the 19th Century,” 2023), which is the first on the publishing market to address the issue of the functioning of women translators in public space in such depth. The author focuses on revealing the habitus of 19th century female translators entangled in social norms, prohibitions, tendencies brought up from the family home—and shows them as factors influencing their translation decisions. Through a deep analysis topped by two lexicons: of Polish female translators of the first and second half of the 19th century, Dębska brings out of the shadows the figures so far overlooked in the pages of history or completely forgotten.
