The aim of this article is to present the role of medicinal plants depicted in the songs of praise for Māriyamman and the important role they play in the ritual and in the cult of this goddess. This paper illustrates the connection between Māriyamman’s power of healing and the use of particular flowers to satisfy the goddess and cure the illness, usually skin problems, suffered by the worshippers. The medicinal plants and the benefits of their use are discussed in the context of a division into two socio-ritual spheres – kadu and nadu – representing areas overgrown by nature and inhabited by people respectively. They are analysed to present the strong influences of medicinal plants in the ritual performed in the cult of Māriyamman. With their help, the goddess, – despite the progressive process of Sanskritization in her cult, still representing the dangerous powers of nature that need to be appeased to be protective – becomes more accessible and benevolent towards people.

Early Western accounts of arabian medicine reflected the legacy of conflict rather than na analysis of islamic medicine as a component of a system of faith and a means of dealing with yhe universal problema of illness. For many European scholars, arabian medicine was significantonly in terms of the role it played in preserving greekliterature during the European Dark ages according to science and technology. There isn`t a good medicine and pharmacy. Therefore, arabian medicine was understood as synonymous with arabic medicine.

W hermetycznym świecie swojej powieści Czarodziejska Góra opisał Tomasz Mann zarówno rutyny – z ich kolistą strukturą powtarzania czasu – jak i lęki, które w procesie choroby i zagrożenia dla pokoju powoduje liniowy postęp czasu, mimo wszelkich podejmowanych prób ich wyparcia. Pytanie, czy ‚bohater‘ przeżyje wojnę, pozostaje do końca powieści otwarte.

When confronted with a new environment, should we withstand and endure fears in order to learn new routines of coping with anxiety, or rather flee from the danger as quickly as possible? In the hermetic world of his novel The Magic Mountain Thomas Mann has described routines with their circular repetition structure of time as well as the fears which the linear progress of time – in spite of all attempts at repression – causes in the process of the disease and the threat to peace. Whether the ‚hero‘ of the novel will survive the war, remains open at the end of the novel.

In der hermetischen Welt seines Romans Der Zauberberg hat Thomas Mann Routinen mit ihrer kreisförmigen Wiederholungsstruktur der Zeit ebenso beschrieben wie die Ängste, die der lineare Fortschritt der Zeit im Prozess der Krankheit und der Gefährdung des Friedens trotz aller Verdrängungsversuche verursacht. Ob der ‚Held‘ des Romans den Krieg überleben wird, bleibt am Ende des Romans offen.
