The text revolves around the use of lake isles by Western Slavs and Western Balts in the North European Plain in the early Middle Ages. The main goal of this article is to collect, discuss and analyse early medieval written sources that provide information about the locations’ forms and functions among old communities. This process has resulted in a picture of the various uses of isles by Slavs (and, to a small extent, by the Balts) which may serve as the starting point for an analysis of archaeological sources.

The question of the origin of the Plitvice Lakes, situated in the Dynarics Mountains, in central Croatia is still unexplained. Not so many place in a literature is dedicated to this issue. It is said that the Plitvice Lakes are of tectonic or karst origin. In the article the complicated origin of the lakes is shown. To define their origin the author proposes the term “tectonic - barriered”. As a result of tectonical movements which occured on the researched area, many tectonic faults were formed. At the bottom of the lakes barriers of sedra - rock of biogenic origin started to grow. The process of sedra creating has been lasting till today and as a result a very complicated, permanently transformed lakes system has formed. At present, below the lowest located lake of the Plitvice Lakes new lakes appear, which demonstrate about existing and growing submarine barriers.

Przedstawiono wyniki analizy zmian powierzchni i liczebności wszystkich jezior Pojezierza Dobrzyńskiego w ciągu ostatnich 110 lat.

This paper presents the results of the analysis of changes in the surface area and number of lakes in the Dobrzyń Lake District over the past 110 years. In the analysis cartographic materials from three periods were used : 1900 – 1915, 1980 – 1985 and 2009, making it possible to capture changes in the surface area of lakes and determine their trend. The results indicate a decrease in the surface area of the studied lakes in the mentioned period of time. The biggest changes occurred in the case of the smallest lakes of surface area less than 5 hectares. It was found out that the decrease in lake surface area in specific parts of the Lake District was uneven. The largest decrease occurred in the southern, north-eastern and particularly south-eastern parts of it. Changes in the surface area of individual lakes ranged from a few to several tens of percent (in the case of lake disappearance it was one hundred percent). The most common consequence of these changes was an increase in the lakeshore length due to the creation of peninsulas and bays. In several cases, the emergence of small islands was also observed. The trend of lake surface area decreasing indicated in the paper is consistent with the results obtained by other authors in other parts of Poland.

Badania torfowisk i jezior (kopalnych i współczesnych) prowadzone były na całym obszarze Polesia w ramach Biura Melioracji Polesia. Prace badawcze wykonane zostały przez grupę florystyczno-torfową kierowaną przez prof. Stanisława Kulczyńskiego z Uniwersytetu Jana Kazimierza we Lwowie.

A study of mires and lakes (fossil and contemporary) was conducted in the whole Polesie area, within a framework of the Polish Governement Bureau for Land Reclamation in Polesie. The research lasted for five and a half years and was operated by a peat-floristic group directed by professor Stanisław Kulczyński from the Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov. Map of the Polesie mires was drafted for 12 514 km², 2833 drillings were made, 4357 floristic survey were taken. The documents presents the stratigraphic of mires, their age, vegetation, hydrology and division of mires according to the natural types and genus. The above mentioned study resulted in a monograph of S. Kulczyński “Peat bogs of Polesie” published in Polish in 1939/1940 and in English in 1949. Genesis of lakes was also examined by geographers lead by prof. S. Lencewicz from the Józef Piłsudski University in Warsaw.

The article discusses, from the content/motif aspect, 30 folk legends about the disappeared lakes in Tolmin region, Slovenia. The material covers different archival manuscripts and publications, mainly from Janez Dolenc’s student archive. In all the legends under study the location of the lake is specified. In addition to this, most of them feature at least one of the following motifs: emergence of settlements, existence of rings used for fastening water vehicles, water traffic, an explanation of who or what caused the disappearance of the lake and how and where it happened.
