The aim of this paper is to offer an interpretation of two contemporary art works: James Turrell’s Roden Crater and Philip K. Smith’s Lucid Stead. They are seen as projects that may be qualified as examples of art based on the artists’ playing with light. The claim being that one of the factors that engenders a contemplative attitude on behalf of the beholder is the presence of light in relation to the artwork’s structure.

Along with the deepening of the ecological crisis, our understanding of its nature is also increasing. While the analysis of its causes and effects, along with the development of a strategy to overcome it, was at first carried out solely by representatives of the natural and technical sciences, it has now been undertaken also by humanists, artists and cultural and religious leaders. The joining of humanists in this endeavour enables better recognition of the nature of the ecological crisis and consequently helps to develop a more adequate strategy to counteract its impact. Particularly noteworthy is the contribution of world religions in shaping a realistic relationship between humanity and nature. This article points to the increasing humanisation of the ecological reflection and offers examples of the commitment demonstrated by representatives of various religious traditions to the protection of forests

Wraz z narastaniem kryzysu ekologicznego mamy do czynienia z coraz to lepszym jego rozpoznaniem. O ile początkowo analizą przyczyn i skutków kryzysu oraz wypracowywaniem strategii jego przezwyciężania zajmowali się reprezentanci nauk przyrodniczych i technicznych, o tyle obecnie dołączyli do nich humaniści, artyści, ludzie kultury i przywódcy religijni. Włączenie się humanistów pozwoliło na lepsze rozpoznanie natury kryzysu ekologicznego, a co za tym idzie – na wypracowanie bardziej adekwatnej strategii jego przezwyciężenia. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje wkład światowych religii w kształtowanie realistycznej relacji człowieka do przyrody. Artykuł ten ukazuje postępującą humanizację refleksji ekologicznej i przywołuje przykłady zaangażowania przedstawicieli różnych tradycji religijnych na rzecz ochrony lasów.

Rich and diverse portfolio of works by Herzog & de Meuron is an unique example of a vast potential of combining contemporary art and architecture. Instead of basing on usual scheme of a work of art and its neutral background, described activities, rooted in Jacques Herzog’s artistic experiences, broaden standard definitions of both disciplines. Numerous a empts of collaboration between the architects and the artists (e.g. Rémy Zaugg, Thomas Ruff, Ai Weiwei, Olafur Eliasson and occasionaly even extended in a larger scale. Works by Herzog & de Meuron may be treated as a barometer of contemporary time – showing, interpreting, or even stimulating certaing architectural trends and tendencies.

Bogata i różnorodna twórczość pracowni Herzog & de Meuron jest unikalnym przykładem olbrzymiego potencjału łączenia współczesnej architektury i sztuki. Nie chodzi tu jednak o tradycyjny schemat dzieła i neutralnego tła. Działania zakorzenione w doświadczeniach artystycznych Jacques’a Herzoga dają efekty wykraczające poza standardowe rozumienie obu dziedzin. Liczne próby współpracy architektów z artystami (byli to m.in. Rémy Zaugg, Thomas Ruff, Ai Weiwei, Olafur Eliasson i Anish Kapoor) poszerzają granice sztuki i architektury, dając czasem prekursorskie rozwiązania, kontynuowane i rozwijane później w szerszej skali. Twórczość Herzoga i de Meurona można traktować jako swoisty barometr współczesności – ukazujący, interpretujący bądź wyprzedzający i stymulujący pewne trendy i tendencje w architekturze.
