The article aims at presenting the description of the category of ‘animal’ in the human brain, mind and language. The article reports the results of linguistic, psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic research.
EN
The article asks questions about the human cognitive abilities – how it is to be an animal of a species different from one’s own. Using as a basis the doubts of the philosopher Thomas Nagel, the author proceeds to discuss the standpoint of  ethnologists Frans de Waal and Konrad Lorenz, who accept the limitations of the human cognitive apparatus and language, with the help of which we describe what we call the “animal.” The author suggests that the problem of contemporary humanities and animal studies lies not  in anthropodenial, but in anthropomorphism, rooted in the centrism typicalof our species, which seems impossible to overcome. The author also proposes a thesis that the wayto overcome this issue is for people to gain knowledge about these limitations. This knowledge, supported by interspeciesempathy, developed in the process of coevolution of animal species (humans being one of them), is the most effective tool of heuristics.

A comparative study of selected issues in Jan Baudouin de Courtenay’s and Karol Appel’s theories of linguistic psychologism. Summary: This paper is an attempt to compare selected ontological, epistemological and methodological issues present in Jan Baudouin de Courtenay’s and Karol Appel’s scientific theories, which are considered representative of the so-called linguistic psychologism. These concepts are explained in light of the philosophical assumptions of W. von Humboldt, F. le Dantec and H. Vaihinger, which served as a direct inspiration for Polish scholars. Apart from pointing to a number of similarities, the author also enumerates and discusses significant differences in the understanding of the relationship between the subject and the object of cognition, the notion of reality, and the criteria of truth which prompt the question of the possibility of defining psychologism as a scientific paradigm. Keywords: language, individual, psyche, psychologism, reality, cognition, experience, constructivism, fiction
