Film is a powerful medium that can influence audience’s perceptions, values and ideals. As filmmaking evolved into a serious art form, it became a powerful tool for telling stories that require us to re-examine our ideology. While it remains popular to adapt a literary novel or text for the screen, filmmakers have more freedom to pick and choose the stories they want to tell. This freedom allows filmmakers to explore narratives that might otherwise go unheard, which include stories that feature marginal figures, such as serial killers, as sympathetic protagonists, which is what director Patty Jenkins achieves in her 2003 film Monster. Charlize Theron’s transformation into and performance as Aileen Wuornos, and Jenkins’s presentation of the subject matter, make this film an example of rogue cinema. In addition, Aileen Wuornos is portrayed as a clear example of the rogue character. This character trope frequently defies social standards, suffers from past trauma, is psychologically complex, and is often exiled. As a prostitute and social outcast, Aileen Wuornos exists on the fringes of society and rejects the hegemonic power structure and later heteronormativity of society, which makes her a rogue figure. While there are several aspects to consider when analyzing Jenkins’s film, my intention is to argue that this film is an example of rogue cinema because of its content. In order to accomplish this task, I examine Theron’s bodily transformation and her performance as Wuornos. Furthermore, I look at how Jenkins handles the depiction of romantic love and gendered violence and argue that her treatment of this content renders this film rogue.

The paper analyzes the ways in which the state approach to homosexuality in Communist Czechoslovakia intersected with actually lived lives and experiences of ordinary non-heterosexual people who identified (mainly retroactively) as gays, lesbians or transsexuals. In the Czech context, this is the first research of its kind and combines oral history with a gender analysis of sexological literature from the communist period, to put together a complex mosaic of sexuality in recent past. This confrontation of methods exposes the processes by which gender and sexuality in this era worked as tools of regulation and control, and shows how non-heterosexual people responded to this pressure. The paper offers a multilayer reading and analysis of normality/deviance, public/private and submission/resistance in communist Czechoslovakia.

Although the topic of sexual orientation and homosexuality is no longer considered taboo and the social status of LGBT individuals has improved significantly in the last few decades, prejudice, intolerance and homophobia are still deeply rooted in parts of our society. The aim of the empirical research conducted at a specific college was to analyse students´ attitudes towards sexual minorities. The data were gathered using an anonymous online questionnaire in February 2016. In total, 350 respondents participated in the questionnaire survey. The research results indicate that the attitudes of college students towards homosexuals and lesbians is very liberal. However, the issue of sexual minorities remains a topical one. This preliminary research study should be followed up by other empirical studies.

The article’s subject is the status of the homosexual minority in the world of sports, which-as one would assume-is a hetero-normative world. The author draws attention to the different situations of lesbians and gays in sports as a result both of the manner in which sports themselves are seen and of how femininity and masculinity in sports are viewed (certain types of sports activity are perceived as being masculine, and certain as being feminine). The attitudes of the male and female athletes themselves are described, as well as the attitude towards them in the sports environment and their perception in public opinion. The Gay Games, competitions for sexual minorities, are also presented, with their relation to mainstream (heterosexual) sports. Particular attention is paid to the ambiguous status of sexual minorities and various practices used within these milieus and towards them

Do nich – braci i sióstr – Kościół mówi: „Potrzebujemy siebie nawzajem. [...] Jesteście zawsze naszymi dziećmi”.

The Holy Scripture and Church teaching recognise homosexual relations as contrary to the order of things established by the Creator. These relations constitute a threat to happy eternity as well as damage the innate dignity of their perpetrators and the social model of the family. Preaching on the subject of homosexuality addressed to homosexual persons should be a gentle invitation to chastity. The preaching must absolutely be founded on love, which will allow the Church to call out to its homosexual brothers and sisters: “We need one another [...] You are always our children”.

Conscience is the light of truth, says a Catholic lesbian, Polish human rights activist. To her, it should be the key signpost in life. Obvious, though it may seem, being a non-heteronormative person in a democratic country may prove challenging. In addition, to reconcile one’s psychosexual orientation with religion requires breaking the ground and pushing the boundaries. Eventually, only a handful of people manage to further their own agenda. Th e present paper focuses on a personal narrative of a Polish lesbian who has managed to find the way to God. It is a case study which offers insights into how one manages to reconcile seemingly opposing identities. It is meant to reveal the stages of the process of coming to terms with one’s complicated social situation.

This article is about homophobia in Polish realities. An extensive theoretical element was also supplemented by qualitative research – interviews with homosexuals about violence, discrimination and other hardships. Analysis of the research material confirmed the high level of direct homophobia in cases with which the subjects were dealing, but also indirect homophobia which is targeted toward whole LGBT community. This article presents a range of problems which have to be faced by homosexuals in Poland. The article, besides the author’s own research, also consists of research material from the unpublished report of the Center for Research on Prejudice.

Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy zjawiska homofobii w polskich realiach. This article is about homophobia in Polish realities.
