The study Masochisms. Mythologizing as an Aesthetics of Crisis in the Work of Bruno Schulz, parts of which have been translated below, presents the thesis that in the work of B. Schulz the phenomenon of mythologizing is connected with masochism – a concept conceived of as a historical, cultural and aesthetic interpretative category. The combination of the two phenomena makes it possible to notice some relationships between Schulz’s literary and graphic works which have not been recognized yet. The author discusses some psychoanalytical, sociological, historical and philosophical notions of masochism applicable to a literary text. She tries to describe the “masochistic aesthetics” appearing in Schulz’s short stories (on the narrative level: lack of motion, suspense, tension) and in his graphics (theatricalization, lack of eye contact between the figures) and shows how this aesthetics integrates the prose of Schulz, his Idolatrous Book and his illustrations for the short story The Book.

Inasmuch as Polish readers can be familiar with the name of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, he is hardly ever associated with Galicia. However, among the author’s works one can find texts related to that region of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. An important problem in the Polish-language research on Sacher-Masoch’s work is the absence of that motif, which is surprising especially in the context of the popularity of studies of Galicia itself. This and other issues connected with the reception of the author’s work by the Poles, are the subject of this article.

This paper attempts to contextualize the creation and use of four terms defining forms of sexual expression commonly referred to as „sadomasochism” or „BDSM”. Drawing on historical sources from the turn of the 20th century and on his contemporary field research, the author demonstrates the entanglement of the language that we use to describe those phenomena in the wider history of creating and contesting the sexual norm.

The article offers a close reading of Witold Gombrowicz’s short story Banquet at Countess Kotłubaj’s from his debut collection Memoirs from a Time of Immaturity (later published under the title Bakakaj or Bacacay in the English translation). It is based on two theoretical concepts: on the one hand – a paranoid plot (according to Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick 2014), on the other hand – sadism (as non-complementary to masochism) in the sense of Gilles Deleuze (from his essay Coldness and cruelty). The author is looking for social subversion in the grotesque images of class and finds it in the sadism of the institution of aristocracy which moves the main character into a paranoid position.

Artykuł prezentuje „bliskie czytanie” (close reading) opowiadania Biesiada u hrabiny Kotłubaj Witolda Gombrowicza z jego debiutanckiego tomu Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania z 1933 roku.

Rozprawa stanowi analizę utworu z 1925 roku poprzez pryzmat koncepcji filozoficznych Camille’a Flammariona, w szczególności zaś teorii przedstawionych na kartach romansu astronomicznego „Urania”.

The study is an analysis of the 1925 work through the prism of Camille Flammarion’s philosophical conceptions, especially the theories contained in his astronomical romance “Uranie” (“Urania”). The author of the article also examines the protagonist’s ontological status, and arrives at the conclusion that the dreaming Świda represents the “weak” subjectivity which refers to Young Poland’s worldview and practice. The paper also touches the issue of masochism as the paradigm that characterises the most seminal female-male relationships in the novel. This relationship is set contrasted with Urania, idealised by the protagonist, a symbol of Flammarion’s cosmic utopia and an expression of yearning for the order projected by the 19th century.
