The work of Jerzy Spława-Neyman related to the estimation and the statistical hypotheses verification theories (developed in cooperation with Egon Pearson) as well as his mathematical analysis of the sampling theory (which pointed to the unjustified application of target sampling instead of random sampling) all contributed to the fast progress of mathematical statistics and the adoption of technical sampling in the past century. We are remembering this distinguished statistician on his 40th death anniversary, which falls in 2021. The aim of the article is to present Spława-Neyman’s scientific achievements, mainly from the period of his residence in Poland (1921–1938). His contemporary body of work continues to inspire ever-new generations of statisticians all around the world.

Prace Jerzego Spławy-Neymana w zakresie teorii estymacji oraz weryfikacji hipotez statystycznych (prowadzone wspólnie z Egonem Pearsonem), jak również dokonana przez niego matematyczna analiza teorii wyboru próby, wskazująca na nieuzasadnione stosowanie wyboru celowego zamiast wyboru losowego, miały istotny wpływ na szybki postęp w statystyce matematycznej i stosowanie metody reprezentacyjnej w ciągu ostatnich 100 lat. Przypadająca w tym roku 40. rocznica śmierci tego wybitnego polskiego statystyka stanowi okazję do przywołania jego postaci. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie osiągnięć Spławy- -Neymana, głównie z lat 1921–1938, kiedy krajem jego stałego zamieszkania była Polska. Jego ówczesna twórczość inspiruje kolejne pokolenia statystyków na całym świecie.

Egon Vielrose był wybitnym polskim demografem, statystykiem i ekonometrykiem. Studiował matematykę na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim oraz ekonomię w Wyższej Szkole Handlowej. Habilitował się na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim. Jego zainteresowania badawcze dotyczyły problemów demografii, statystyki matematycznej, ekonometrii i statystyki społeczno‑ekonomicznej. Ważne miejsce w jego dorobku zajmują studia z zakresu demografii historycznej, dotyczące głównie ruchu naturalnego, decydującego o rozwoju zaludnienia. Naukowy dorobek Egona Vielrose’a obejmuje ponad dwieście prac, w tym sześć książek i ponad sto trzydzieści artykułów.

Egon Vielrose was an outstanding Polish demographer, statistician and econometrician. He studied mathematics at Warsaw University and economics at the Higher School of Trade and then he qualified as an assistant professor at Warsaw University. His research interests focused on problems of demography, mathematical statistics, econometrics and socio‑economic statistics. An important place in the work of Egon Vielrose is occupied by studies in historic demography, concerning mostly the natural movement which is a decisive factor in population development. The scientific output of Egon Vielrose encompasses over 200 works including 6 books and over 130 papers.

The problem of cloud services integration in project activity for students of pedagogical universities has been considered in the article. The experience of cloud services and project activity combination in teaching “Mathematical Statistics” and “Modern Information Technologies” for the students of psychological and pedagogical faculty of PNPU named after V. H. Korolenko obtaining “Psychology” training has been described. It has been determined that the best way to train students to work with the latest information and communication technologies is to introduce these technologies into the educational process. The analysis of the best practices and our own experience in the use of cloud services in university has showed that information and communication technologies give the possibility for students to organize their project activity and significantly increase the learning potential of the project method. Didactic opportunities of project method as a form of independent work based on cloud services have been presented. The stages of the group research project while studying “Mathematical statistics” (e.g. identifying the problem and formulating research theme; finding out the status of definite problem, statistical analysis of experimental data; generalization of research results; presentation of group project and its evaluation) have been characterized as well as its effectiveness in the context of the basic concepts of descriptive statistics and practical skills development to collect and process data of experimental psychological research with Google Apps: forms (online questionnaires, tests), Google sheets. The possibilities of information and telecommunication project while studying IT disciplines as the effective means of information and communication competence formation for the future professionals have been considered. The course “Modern Information Technologies” for psychologists has described the tutor’s coordination concerning information and telecommunication projects implementation; indicative tasks for information and telecommunication projects using cloud services have been given. It has been found out that the combination of cloud and project technologies while studying mathematics and IT sciences for students of liberal arts simplifies understanding and assimilation of subjects content, forms subject and IT competence, capability of innovative activity, develops creative and research skills as well as critical thinking and flexibility, promotes communicative activity.
