This study investigates Pope Benedict’s visit to Turkey as a global media event. The presentation includes the interaction between the global and the local in mass communication studies. The argument is that this visit makes visible some contradictions such as: East/West, EU/Turkey, Christian/Muslim, Catholic/Orthodox. Before this trip, it was presupposed that these contradictions and stereotypes reinforced by the media were to set the agenda; however, it did not happen to be the case. Instead, the existing frames had been replaced by the new ones, which was called a frame shift in news reporting. The discourse method is used to prove this hypothesis. Data were collected during the trip and the visual materials helped in building our theoretical perspective. The aim is to observe the handling of this media event by Western press. Within this perspective, our sample had been formed by pioneering newspapers: Le Monde, Le Figaro, La Libération, The Guardian, The New York Times, Financial Times, Der Spiegel, BBC on-line and Time (magazine).

In the Japanese media, individuals and corporate executives bow in front of the cameras tearfully asking for forgiveness for their misconduct. Compared to media apologies in the Europe and the United States, it is clear that the Japanese are following strict formal rules, including even the length and the degree of the bow during the apology, while Western apologies are diverse. The comparative case-study of this study shows not only the uniqueness of Japanese apologies but structural differences in apologies between cultures based on the understanding of responsibility.

In this publication we would like to consider the issue of discursive strategy responsible for mediatisation of the migrant crisis currently taking place in Europe, partly as a result of military actions in the Middle East. The first objective is to describe media representation of the European migrant crisis published in the French and Polish press over the last five years. The author especially emphasizes one discursive moment, year 2015, when a significant increase in the number of migrants arriving in Europe occurred. The next task will be to assess the argumentative potential that results from a particular staging of the discussed event.

John Paul II can certainly be considered an outstanding personality of our time, not merely due to the long duration of his pontificate. He was the first roman pontifex – during the age of mass media – who reached out to the whole world personally, including dissenters as well as infidels. We present here a pastoral-theological review reflecting on the media presence of the deceased pontifex John Paul II, highlighting different aspects of its papacy and providing a theological interpretation. John Paul II didn’t intend to reshape papacy, but did point to different aspects of it. We’d like to assess the changes which resulted from his massive presence in the media additionally to presenting insights in what way the distinct features of his outward appearance in the media can contribute today to make “church as a universal sign” more or less experienceable. The pope from Poland made use of the media like no other pontifex before him leading to the large media attention he received at the end of his life which is unparalleled in history of the Holy See. He enjoyed great appearances and was even selected “Man Of The Year” by Time magazine in 1995.

The article relates to the circulation of sayings in the press discourse, which leads to create a media event and to determine its social meaning. The press discourse is intrinsically heterogeneous because of the references to statements of public life actors and to various texts. Those mentions are not always manifest, so we are dealing with intertextuality and interdiscursivity as well. The article presents several marks of both on example of articles from Le Figaro and Le Monde related to the “bonnets rouges” manifestations in November 2013. It shows how intertextuality and interdiscursivity influence the meaning of the media event and why it is interesting to distinguish them. The analysis is mainly inspired by the theories of S. Moirand (2007).

Among all known disasters, cataclysms and catastrophes, the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant holds a particular place in human memory. There are several reasons for that. Firstly, as one of the largest industrial disasters in history, it was an incident of truly global reach that put citizens of many countries at risk. Secondly, people were suddenly forced to confront with an invisible enemy, one that raises the greatest fear, which made that fight extremely uneven. Thirdly, the explosion occurred at a specific moment in history and in a specific country, as a result of which relevant information, limited as it was, was released to the public with a significant delay, with some events of 26 April 1986 not fully explained until today. These are probably only a few reasons why this catastrophe continues to stir emotions even after 30 years. The aim of the discussion presented here is to find the source of the current increase in interest in Chernobyl, analyse media discourse associated with disasters and predict their possible effects.

Nowadays, sport is a very important part of media reality. Thanks to the media, sports events can be watched by millions of viewers. The purpose of this article is to illustrate how sports events are perceived as media events as well as to discuss the process of the mediatization of sport and to analyze examples of the most popular sports transmissions on Polish television. In the research, we analyze the ratings of the most popular sports broadcasts in the modern history of Polish television as well as the ratings of selected sports broadcasts after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes show that sports events are very popular among Polish viewers. Additionally, the paper examines solutions used by the media to broadcast sports events during the COVID-19 pandemic. These solutions were supposed to make the sports events more diversified and more like the events held before the outbreak of the epidemic.

In the press discourse, we may observe three main discursive strategies which construct the social sense of the events in the media. There are the activity of nomination, actualization of information and insertion of antagonists discourses. These problems will be presented from the perspective of discursive semantics through the concepts proposed by S. Moirand (2007, 2014): media interdiscursive memory, discursive moment, word-event. They will show the dynamic construction of social sense of words which we called units circulating in the public sphere. The analysis is illustrated by the conflict on airport project at Notre-Dame-des-Landes which was abandon by the French government in 2018 after 50 years of citizens contestation.

Zabieg przeniesienia rzeczywistego wydarzenia w sferę wirtualną stanowił inspirację do tego, aby napisać, wraz z Iwoną Morozow, scenariusz postmodernistycznego filmu dokumentalnego. Dwa teksty publikowane w jednym tomie stanowią zatem zaproszenie do realizacji trzeciego i ostatniego etapu projektu czyli realizacji filmu. W efekcie podjętych działań chcemy, aby powstał multimedialny hipertekst.

Articles published in this issue are two first stages in an experiment in humbugization of anthropology: popularizing it through nontraditional research. First article deals with the analysis of the national mourning after the Polish presidential plane crash on 10th April 2010 as media event, defined by specific narrative pattern with ability to change the profane into the sacred for TV spectators. The second article draws from this interpretation to create a postmodern screenplay for an anthropological documentary. Both articles form an invitation to consider subversive ways of anthropological presentation and realize the final stage of this project – a film and, more broadly, a multi-medial hypertext.
