During the Second World War Nazi occupying forces closed down the University of Warsaw and other Polish academies. Secondary and higher level education was forbidden. In spite of interdictions and death penalty threat many professors were teaching in private apartments. That activity created a structure of secret studies, which became part of the Polish resistance. The Medical Faculty was the most active department of the University of Warsaw. Many young people wanted to start or continue medical studies, therefore the Medical Faculty Council decided to establish a secret two-year Medical College, (which later evolved into full Medical Faculty) and legal private vocational school known as Professor Zaorski’s School. Officially the school was educating medical help staff (nurses, paramedics) but unofficially they were future medical doctors, because the institution secretly carried out the program of the first two years of regular medical studies. Alumni of Prof. Zaorski’s School could continue their studies at the secret Medical Faculty during hospital practices. The secret Medical Faculty of the University of Warsaw completed its activity along with the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.

Artykuł zawiera biografię oraz informacje z zakresu działalności zawodowej i społecznej dr Wandy Marii Błeńskiej (1911-2014), postaci szlachetnej w pełni poświęcającej się udzielaniu pomocy medycznej i humanitarnej chorym w Afryce i innych krajach świata. Podczas studiów medycznych na Uniwersytecie Poznańskim (1928-1934) Wanda Błeńska uczestniczyła w działalności akademickich kół misyjnych, pełniąc m.in. funkcję redaktora Annales Missiologicae. Po studiach specjalizowała się w zakresie serologii i mikrobiologii w Państwowym Instytucie Higieny w Warszawie. W latach czterdziestych studiowała medycynę tropikalną w Hamburgu i Liverpoolu, aby spełnić swoje marzenia o pracy jako lekarz na misjach. W roku 1950 przybyła do Ugandy (Afryka), a w 1951 została dyrektorem medycznym ośrodka leczenia trędowatych w Bulubie-Nyenga. Kierowała tym ośrodkiem przez 32 lata, a przez następne 10 lat była konsultantem medycznym tego ośrodka, zajmując się doskonaleniem młodych lekarzy oraz szkoleniem studentów i pomocniczego personelu medycznego. Przyczyniła się walnie do rozwoju szpitala w Bulubie oraz doskonalenia systemu opieki zdrowotnej dla trędowatych w Ugandzie i innych krajach afrykańskich poprzez założenie szkoły kształcącej medyczny personel pomocniczy dla kilku krajów afrykańskich oficjalnie nazwanej Wanda Błeńska Training Center. Po powrocie w roku 1993 do Poznania, prawie do końca życia, prowadziła działalność edukacyjną, charytatywną, organizacyjną, wychowawczą i społeczną. Była współzałożycielem fundacji Redemptoris Missio. Za swoje osiągnięcia otrzymała liczne wyróżnienia, m.in. medale papieży Jana XXIII, Pawła VI i Jana Pawła II, prezydentów RP Lecha Wałęsy i Bronisława Komorowskiego oraz tytuł doctor honoris causa Akademii Medycznej w Poznaniu.

The article includes biography and data on professional and social activities of Dr. Wanda Maria Błeńska (1911-2014), a high-minded person fully dedicated to medical help and humanitarian aid for the people in Africa and other countries of the world. Dr. Wanda Błeńska studied medicine at the University of Poznań (1928-1934), being engaged at that time in the academic missionary circles serving among others as editor of Annales Missiologicae. She also attended the State Institute of Hygiene in Warsaw where she specialized in serology and microbiology. In forties she studied tropical medicine in Hamburg and Liverpool to fulfil her dreams to work as missionary doctor. In 1950 she arrived in Uganda (Africa) and in 1951 she became the medical director of leprosy centre in Buluba-Nyenga. She headed this institution for 32 years and thereafter, for a period of ten years, she trained there physicians, students and medical personnel, in addition to functioning as a medical consultant. Dr. Błeńska contributed much to development of the Buluba leprosy centre and to the health care system for lepers in Uganda and other countries of Africa due to founding a school teaching medical auxiliary personnel for leprosy stations dispersed in African countries, the school officially named Wanda Błeńska Training Center. After returning to Poznań in 1993 she continued, almost to end of her life, the welfare, educational, organizational and social work. She was cofounder of Redemptoris Missio foundation. Her achievements were awarded by plentiful honors, among others with medals by popes John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II, also by the presidents of Poland Lech Wałęsa and Bronisław Komorowski and with the title Doctor Honoris Causa of Academy of Medicine in Poznań.

Prezentowane są warunki przyjęcia na studia na kierunki lekarskie, struktura tych studiów, ich programy oraz formy realizacji, a także egzaminy uprawniające do zdobycia uprawnień zawodowych. Rozwiązania stosowane na różnych uczelniach są okazją do porównań oraz propozycji mogących poprawić efektywność kształcenia studentów medycyny.

This article introduces doctors’ training systems in selected European countries. It describes entry requirements and application procedures for medical studies, structure of studies, study programs, their implementation pathway, and also the exams entitling to acquire professional qualifications. The solutions used at various universities are an opportunity to compare and suggestions that could improve the efficiency of training the medical students.
